For those Australians on the list who are interested in The Aussie Sidecar
final, results in the individual O'Brien 1st, Cleave 2nd, Drew 3rd.
Disturbing news that Darrin Treloar was late for the Best Pairs title, was
subsequently disqualified and fined. This meant that NSW rider Grant Bond
had to pair up with little known rider from Broken Hill. I will be waiting
with great interest to hear the reason why Treloar was late for such an
important meeting. Maybe someone on the list may have the REAL story and
full details of the meeting.

Highlights
Very good effort from the away team. In spite of missing their No.1 Ryan Sullivan
(on duty at Peterborough), Apator Torun did not mean to give in. Bydgoszcz's
second strings seemed surprised with the track conditions as there was very little
grip in first heats. Shane Parker replaced Joe Screen but failed to score in his first two
races. Shane's bike seemed far too slow for Polish tracks. In addition
to that, his bike had an oil leakeage, which appeared to be unrepairable
during the meeting (Pawel Protasiewicz - Piotr's father made an effort
to fix the hole in the bike with a piece of wood).
First heats did not feature anything spectacular. In heat 6 Jagus found some
extra grip on the inside of the fourth bend and (inadvertently?) came in
front of Gollob. Tomasz switched on turbo booster and regained the
lead immediately. In heat 7, when Henka Gustafsson managed to split
the leading pair of Peter Karlsson and Mirek Kowalik.
After heat 8, the results' board displayed 24-24. Bydgoszcz requested 4 minute
time-out and the show began. Shane Parker came out of pits on the blue bike
with No 2 to join his 1998 KL team mate Protasiewicz at the tapes. The Torun
pair went in front from the start. Everything changed on the third and fourth
bend of lap 1, after Shane beautifully dived underneath the leading duo and
put his nose in front. Protasiewicz followed Shane and
came out third but needed only one lap to get by Chrzanowski. Heat 9 produced
again 5-1 for Bydgoszcz and the 15 thousand crowd was delighted. This time
Tajchert used Gollob's bike. Torun stroke back in heat 10 but that was all
they could do and Bygdoszcz finally managed to pull this one off
(again important points from Parker and Tajchert in heats 12, 13 and 14).
After heat 12, Gollob was unhappy with something that Karlsson had done
(or Tomasz imagined he had). I am not sure if Gollob's nerves related to
Karlsson fencing Parker or something else. Any clue would be appreciated.
Personal comments
>From Heat 8, Bydgoszcz used only five bikes (three of which were Gollob's).
Only Gustafsson and Protasiewicz got their set up right for the slick track.
You should have seen the pits, where Gollob's crew worked on adjusting
Tomasz's bike to suit the rider who was going to use it in a given heat
(Tajchert and Parker - three times each).
Tomasz Gollob once said that the biggest difference between the Polish
league and the BEL concerns the diversity of British tracks as opposite
the tracks in Poland: "I can use one set up for most of the meetings in
Poland..." Assuming he's right, I wonder if it is so difficult to figure out that
universal "Polish tracks" set up that half of the team must borrow Gollob's bike to achieve a
decent result? In particular I do not understand why
Tajchert expected the track would be grippy, given the weather (intense sunshine,
meeting at 4 p.m.) we've had in Poland since Friday. Shane was a bit unlucky
to have had his own bike damaged but frankly - I do not believe he would have
scored 6 points on his own bike. Shane used Gollob's bike in Tomasz's absence in late
1999 season and also produced very good results. I just wonder - Shane,
maybe it would be a wise investment if you bought one for the Polish league?:)).
Cheers,
Tomasz Olkiewicz
