A dramatic race, Povahzny leading when Masters tangled with Lemo at the back
sending both onto the track. Lemo seemed to go gently into the fence and
after a long period of treatment on the track he was diagnosed as suffering
a dislocated shoulder and damaged ankle ligaments. This guy simply has no
luck. And to think he had 'Lucky Lemo' sewn on his backside

The race where we thought Oxford had blown it ! Holding a 5-1 would put
Oxford 6 up and allow Crump/Adams in Heat 14. So the Oxford pair made the
start and we sat back expecting Todd to allow the hard chasing Crump
through. Unfortunately the team management hadn't informed Todd and a 5-1 it
was. It does seem a crazy situation that gaining a 5-1 is possibly a
disadvantage.

The expected 5-1 came but Roman almost got to the 1st corner first

Another dream ride by the Cheetahs pair with Jimmy hitting the front and
allowing Todd round him for the 5-1 and a win for the Cheetahs
So a great win for the Cheetahs for who it was a fine allround performance.
Todd and Jimmy started off slowly but got better and better and their races
got harder, Lemo is just so unlucky (R/R for him is not a good option). Jan
is simply not making starts, he's competitive after that but just not
getting to the 1st corner. Johno was excellent, Dryml is getting better but
still has a long way to go and for me the star of the show was the departing
Povahzny, who again showed why he is such a favourite with the home fans. I
say it again he is so unlucky to be left out of the Oxford side and I really
hope Wolves have got a winner.
For Kings Lynn, the top 3 were excellent. Adams and Crump was their normal
dominating self other than 13 and 15 when it really mattered I guess, but
Adams in particular was winning races by miles. Boycey was much much better
than at any stage last season, he was very determined in the 1st corner and
well worth his score. McGowan showed flashes , Shane had a night to forget
(he's normally pretty good at Oxford) and Masters showed nothing after
impressively winning Heat 2. Madsen was off the pace but this was his first
visit to Oxford.
Again the Cheetahs are making progress, to be fair nobosy expected them to
beat Kings Lynn especially after losing Lemo (albeir this was offset by
Roman's good scoring). Next week sees the Dryml's at reserve as Roman
departs and the key will be Lemo's fitness. With Staek being the rider above
and the reserves it will be very difficult to adequately cover for Lemo.

Gosford staged meeting number 8 of their 1999/2000 season last night in
cold but dry conditions.
The format of the meeting was the usual scratch and handicap racing in Solo
and Sidecar Divisions.
The big news of the night was Craig Watson who is in Australia recovering
from injuries sustained in the Challenge Match against Eastbourne earlier
this season.
Craig was a little tentative in his first couple of rides but got better as
the night wore on.
Interviewed him over the PA and can tell you that he will be leaving for
England on Monday and hopes to ride either this coming Wednesday or the
following Wednesday. He estimates at the moment that he is about 80% fit.

This was an absolute blinder of a race as Shields and Poole (in particular)
worked their way through the field.
The remainder of the programme was abandoned after a HUGE bingle in Event
24 (stars Sidecar Handicap). Chris Pym and passenger Dean Edwards collided
heavily with Jim-Bob Turner and George Rickard. Both passenger hurtled into
the air and fell heavily. George has some suspected damage to his tail
bone, while Dean has rib and chest problems. Both took some time to get to
their feet and George Rickard was taken of to hospital.
Next meeting at Gosford is the season finale on Sunday 11/6/00 at 1pm. This
will be the final meeting under the Terry Poole banner and closes a chapter
in the history of Gosford Speedway. I know how hard Terry has worked to
keep Gosford going and we (the officials) are all sad his time is coming to
an end.

Charlie "The Edge" Venegas made a beautiful trap from gate five and took the
victory in the 2000 Olympique of Speedway at Costa Mesa.
Venegas was first out of the gate and used his momentum from the outside to
slam the door on the rest of the field. Pole-sitter "Rad" Brad Oxley also
made a good start, but Venegas was first to turn one and led at the
completion of lap one. Oxley tried in vain to catch Venegas, but "The Edge"
was too strong and stretched his lead all the way to the checkered flag.
Oxley finished second, Randy DiFrancesco was third, Andy Northrup was fourth,
and Chris Manchester was fifth.
The format used was similar to that of the Olympique at Wolverhampton.
Twenty riders competing in three rounds of five-man heats. First place
earned three points, second place earned two points, third place earned one
point, and fourth and fifth place each earned zero points. The first round
was strictly scratch racing. First and second round winners were then
handicapped 30 yards in the following round, second place finishers were
handicapped 20 yards, third place finishers were handicapped 10 yards, and
fourth and fifth place finishers started at the tapes. The top eight point
scorers from the qualifying rounds were then placed in one of two four-man
scratch semis. The format from that point reverted to the regular format of
scratch racing at Costa Mesa with the top two from each semi transferring to
the main event and third and fourth transferring to the Last Chance
Qualifier. The format provided some very interesting and exciting races with
some surprise winners in the qualifying rounds.
At the conclusion of the qualifying rounds a three-man runoff between
Venegas, Dukie Ermolenko, and 16 year old Ryan Fisher to determine the last
two spots in the semis. Venegas gave the crowd a preview of things to come
with a great start and an easy victory to book his place in the semis.
Fisher and Ermolenko battled with Fisher coming out ahead of the former
British League rider to earn the last spot in the semis.
The first semi took three attempts to complete as on the first attempt
DiFrancesco took Fisher down and forced the first restart with DiFrancesco
being penalized 20 yards. On the second attempt, Fisher went down forcing
DiFrancesco to lay his bike down. Fisher was also penalized 20 yards. Oxley
and Manchester, both all but guaranteed spots in the main, finished first and
second, respectively, sending Fisher and DiFrancesco to the Last Chance
Qualifier, but not after a great battle. Manchester got the gate and led for
two laps with Oxley on his back tire. Oxley's constant pressure forced
Manchester wide and the defending National Champion was able to take the lead
and he held it to the finish.
Venegas trapped from the outside in the second semi and ran away from the
field as he and Northrup qualified for the main as Shawn McConnell pulled up
after a near-collision with Northrup and Bobby Schwartz experienced bike
problems.
In the Last Chance Qualifier, Schwartz, borrowing a bike from Johnny Walker,
made the start and led for a lap and half. However, the unfamiliarity with
his borrowed machinery proved to be costly as he drifted wide and DiFrancesco
was able to pass him and take the last spot in the main.
Support racing used a scratch format and veteran rider Bentley Barrett showed
off his gating ability by getting a great start and running away with the
Support Main. The first attempt didn't get very far as Brad Sauer looped at
the line and was down for several minutes. Fortunately, he was unhurt and
able to compete in the restart. Barrett covered the field going into the
first turn and left the rest to battle for second. Kitt Nay won the battle
of minor placings by finishing second, Sauer was third, and Mark Hitchcock
was fourth.
In the Support B Main, Chad Newlee fought his way to the front in quick
fashion and looked to be assured of a second straight main event victory.
However, Newlee went down in turn three and Brent Smith assumed the lead.
Smith held on the rest of the way to take his first main event of the season.
Tom Collier finished second and Eloy Medellin finished third.
The evening also brought the return of former World Finalist and two-time US
Junior National Champion Josh Larsen to action. Larsen suffered through a
dismal night as he had trouble readjusting to the tight Costa Mesa oval.
Larsen went down in his first heat and was excluded, won his second race, and
fell twice during his third race.
