Conference League title favourites were swept aside by a rampant Lightning
team at Ashfield. Despite having some of the most highly rated Conference
League riders including hot prospect Barrie Evans, Gavin Hedge, and Shane
Colvin, they had no answer to the strength in depth of the Scottish side.
Reserve Rob Grant led the way with a score of sixteen paid seventee from
six rides.
This was a good start for the new team. The crowd looked healthy on a sunny
evening. As this was a normal Glasgow racenight, the crowd was largely
Glasgow supporters. It remains to be seen if they will continue to show up
once Lightning revent to Monday evenings.
Lightning were without the unavailable Jon Swales and injury victim David
McAllan. Steven McAllister came in along with Australian youngster Rusty
Harrison. Steve Campden was absent for the visitors and rider replacement
operated.
Heat 1: Robert McNeil, Barrie Evans, Phil Knowles [64.6]
The referee held the tapes for a long time and Christian Henry blew his
engine on the start line. McNeil swept ahead from the tapes leaving rider
replacement Barrie Evans and Phil Knowles standing. (3-3) (3-3)
Heat 2: Robert Grant, Gary Flint, Jitendra Duffil [64.5]
Paul Lydes-Uings had a cracking start and was followed by Grant and Flint.
Robert Grant and Flint quickly passed Lydes-Uings who then slowed right
down and retired. (5-1) (8-4)
Heat 3: Gavin Hedge, Rusty Harrison, Shane Colvin, Derek Sneddoon [63.7]
Hedge and Colvin blasted ahead from the tapes. Harrison closed on Colvin
and tried an inside pass before getting him on the outside. He couldn't get
anywhere near Hedge. (2-4) (10-8)
Heat 4: Robert Grant, Steven McAllister [64.6]
Grant and McAllister made the start and Jitendra retired early on and
looked very disgruntled on the centre green. Evans tried to get abck on
terms but fell on the last lap. (5-0) (15-8)
Heat 5: Gavin Hedge, Derek Sneddon, Phil Knowles, Rusty Harrison [65.3]
Rider replacement Gavin Hedge again gated with Harrison in hot persuit but
Harrison fell on the first bend and restarted. Derek Sneddon pulled of a
good pass on Phil Knowles to split the Mildenhall pair. (2-4) (17-12)
Heat 6: Christian Henry, Barry Evans, Robert McNeil, Jitendra Duffil [64.4]
Christian Henry came out on Gary Flint's bike and won after getting the
better of Evans on the second bend. Paul Lydes-Uings was two minuted
earlier and was replaced by Duffil. (4-2) (21-14)
Heat 7: Shane Colvin, Gavin Hedges, Steven McAllister, Gary Flint [65.1]
An wasy maximum for the very powerful Mildenhall middle pairing. (1-5) (22-19)
Heat 8: Robert Grant, Robert McNeil, Paul Lydes-Uings [64.5]
Paul Lydes-Uings replaced Duffil as a reserve change. Grant and McNeil
scored a predictable 5-1 after Knowles retired. (5-1) (27-20)
Heat 9: Rusty Harrison, Barrie Evans, Gavin Hedge, Derek Sneddon [63.9]
Gavin Hedge came in as a tactical substitute for Lydes-Uings. Harrison
gated and was pressurized by Hedge. Then Hedge nearly slid off before
recovering in third place. Derek Sneddon closed up and had a go at Hedges
just failing on the line. (3-3) (30-23)
Heat 10: Christian Henry, Gavin Hedge, Shane Colvin, Robert McNeil [64.5]
Christian Henry had an untroubled win over Hedge and Colvin. (3-3) (33-26)
Heat 11: Gary Flint, Shane Colvin, Barrie Evans, Steven McAllister [64.8]
Mildenhall went for broke with Shane Colvin in as a tactical substitute for
rider replacement and Barrie Evans as a tactical substitute for Knowles.
Gary Flint seemed unimpressed and gated for an impressive victory (3-3)

Heat 12: Rusty Harrison, Robert Grant, Gavin Hedge, Paul Lydes-Uings [63.8]
Harrison and Grant acme up with another 5-1 over Hedge. (5-1) (41-30)
Heat 13: Barrie Evans, Shane Colvin, Steven McAllister [64.7]
Shane Colvin came in as rider replacement. Christian Henry was replaced by
reserve Gary Flint. Flint stopped on the first bend as Mildenhall came back
with a 5-1 to keep the match alive. (1-5) (42-35)
Heat 14: Robert Grant, Gary Flint, Shane Colvin, Phil Knowles [64.2]
Gary Flint was replaced by fellow reserve Rob Grant. Derek Sneddon was then
excluded for tape touching and Flint came back in. Knowles replaced Duffil
as a tactical substitute. The reserve pairing Grant and Flint swept ahead
for another win over Colvin. (5-1) (47-36)
Heat 15: Barrie Evans, Rob Grant, Gavin Hedge, Gary Flint [64.5]
Lightning went with their reserve pairing against Evans and Hedges. The two
visitors made the start and although Grant forced his way past Hedges he
could not catch Evans and his maximum was blown. (2-4) (49-40)

Rob Grant, just short of his 16th Birthday was the star for Lightning.
Rusty Harrison was also dominant after taking a couple of heats to get the
feel of the track. Christian Henry was not beaten on the track but pulled
out after three rides due to problems with his bike. The revelation was
Gary Flint who was unrecognizable from the rider of last year. Robert
McNeil also showed a return to form. Derek Sneddon didn't have much luck.
Mildenhall came with effectively a three-man team. Gavin Hedge looked
unstoppable early on but faded. By contrast, Evens started badly but
finished with two straight wins. Shane Colvin failed to produce his
outstanding form so far this season with Reading or Mildenhall. Former
Glasgow Tigers' reserve Jitendra Duffil had a bad time on his return to his
former track.

Subject: Sky Matches

Guys and Girls
I just have a request regarding the matches shown on Sky.
It has come to my attention that when a match is shown on Sky we get lots
and lots of postings on a heat by heat basis, yet when the match has
finished we don't often seem to get a full score chart.
Don't get me wrong I appreciate the effort that every match reporter goes
to in order to give us a comprehensive report, but as a group most seem to
forget a score chart at match end.
As someone who has a regular fortnightly column in an Australian magazine
based on British League, I find it essential to have this information.
I would be very grateful if our reporters can come up with a score chart.
For some strange reason it seems to happen in Sky televised matches more
regularly than in others.
Your assistance would be appreciated.

Fast Fridays Speedway, Auburn, CA - May 12, 2000
Fast Fridays season roared into action on Friday night with a full
program of Speedway racing. It was refreshing to see a lot of new
riders, and with some of last year's top juniors about to move up to
full size machines, there was a healthy bunch of replacements filling in
at the bottom end.
After a week of questionable weather before Friday, and even worse
weather after Friday, the rain delivery department certainly looked
after us, enabling a very nicely prepared racetrack.
The only problem I had was working out who was who. Many riders had new
leathers, so there a few gaps in the results.
Scratch Main

The only real controversy of the evening took place in the Scratch Main.
Because more than one rider was still moving around at the start gate
when the tapes went up, the referee turned on the red light, but neither
flag marshal noticed. By the time the race was stopped Mike Faria and
Charlie Venegas were having a great battle and had already changed
places a number of times while either not noticing or choosing to ignore
the red light. In the re-run Charlie made a lightening fast gate with
Eddie Castro behind him on the inside and Mike Faria using the outside
line he had been using all evening. After a couple of laps Bart moved up
on the inside of Eddie and took second place, but had no chance of
catching Charlie.

The Heddens took the gate, Dukie fell on the first corner and remounted,
but there was no catching Tommy Hedden.

Also qualifying were Ian Ferris, Robert Curry and Dukie Ermolenko.
The handicap main took a while to get going, with a couple of
overambitious starters. Main culprit was Robert Curry, who was moved
back 20 yards. Rich Marcucci started from the 10 yard line and kept
everyone at bay for 5 laps. Second place looked firmly in the hands of
Dukie Ermolenko until the last lap, when he machine stopped. I am still
trying to work out how the other riders managed to miss running into the
back of him. Ryan Fisher took over the position followed by Bobby
Hedden. Curry and Ian Fisher tangled, leaving only three finishers.

their finishing order.
Junior Div 1
1.. Eric Carrillo
Greg Hooten Jnr. moved up from Division 2 and did incredibly well in
winning the earlier heat and holding off Bryan Yarrow until the last
lap. Then the pair tangled and fell. In the course of the next couple of
months, Eric Carillo, Jon Curry and Chris Kerr will have their 16th
birthdays and will move up. Bryan Yarrow is the obvious favorite for
this year's junior national champion, but from last night's showing it
looks as if he will have plenty of competition.

Danny Easley took the lead of a bike length at the gate and Mark
Carrillo was a bike length behind. He stayed there for the entire race.

Clearly destined not to remain in the Junior Third Division TJ Fowler
convincingly won his heat and the main. My guess is that he will soon be
in Div 2.

For the main even the Division 3 Juniors were split up into the faster
ones and the not so fast ones. In fact, 3B comprised brand new riders
who had never raced before. All looked very promising. I was really
impressed with all the juniors. This is the future of Northern
California Speedway, and it looks very healthy.
Another week of regular Speedway next week before the North American
World Qualified on May 26. Sam Ermolenko and John Cook will be over from
Europe for the event.

Fast Fridays Speedway, Auburn, CA - May 19, 2000
Week 2 of Fast Fridays season was another great evening at the Gold
Country Fairgrounds in Auburn. Significantly warmer than the previous
week, the track as always was well prepared but seemed to catch one or
two riders out, resulting in a number of nasty looking accidents, which
in turn lead to lengthy delays and re-run races.

For the second week, Charlie Venegas won the scratch main event from the
gate. On the second lap Bobby Hedden pulled along side him on the
outside, but was unable to pull ahead. Bobby settled in for a safe
second place.

Mike Faria lead this race from the gate. Mike looked incredibly fast all
evening.

Also qualifying were Robert Curry, Billy Janniro and Ian Essary.
In the first running of this race Ian Essary fell down hard. The event
was restarted with a staggered start from the positions of the previous
attempt. The Heddens continued their dominance of the race, with Mike
Faria following. Behind them Robert Curry and Billy Janniro were having
a good battle. But it all ended on turn 4 when they tumbled, with Curry
getting the worst of the deal.
Last week Rich Marcucci rode incredibly well to win the Handicap Main.
His reward was a further 10 yard handicap. This week he suffered an
engine misfire and was unable to get out of his heat.

fell down. In the re-run he missed the start, and just when it looked
like he was moving back up the field his chain broke, leaving it to Ivan

Vince Bertolucci, Chris Orlandi and Kelly McBane also qualified for this
race. After convincing wins in their heats, newcomers Richard Daster
and Billy Hiles pulled away from the rest of the field to take first and
second in the main.

Danny Easley took the lead with Chris Olney in pursuit. They collided
and the race was stopped. In the re-run, without Olney, Easley missed
the start and Mark Carrillo took the race, riding Ed Rose's immaculate
250 Jawa laydown. I will be getting a picture of this unique machine
onto www.speedwaybikes.com in the near future.
It was good to see Josh Newby back, after being absent last season.
Junior Div 3

An enormous turn out of third division juniors. Far too many to run in
one race.
I didn't mention it was week, but I was personally pleased to see the
lack of quads this year. I have always disliked their noise and smell,
and the damage they have done to the track surface. I understand that
entries were mailed to them, but they chose not to race at Auburn. I say
good thing. It leaves more time for Speedway races. I'm not that keen on
the 2 peewee races either, but they do provide a useful supply for next
year's Junior Speedway riders.
Next week is the North American World Championship qualifier round. Sam
Ermolenko and John Cook will be over from Europe, and it will no doubt
be a great event.

pass! Can't win em all!)

ordinary.)
