There seems to be alot of speculation and rumour Brett on this one. I think
it may be a case of wait and see what happens..........

All Australian speedway fans are waiting in anticipation to hear if we are
awarded a round of the Grand Prix in 2001.

There is also a fair degree of speculation surrounding the likely stadium
which will stage this extravaganza. Melbourne is perhaps the favourite in
many people's eyes at this stage. I wonder if Melbourne gets the go ahead
whether it will be at Olympic Park (not to be confused with the Mildura
venue by the same name)?

It is possible that the new air safety fence introduced in this years series
may open up a host of other options which would otherwise have been excluded
previously because of concrete/wooden safety fences. Interesting food for
thought!

Perhaps the biggest obstacle however is likely to be the FIM specifications
regarding track size and shape.

In my opinion the 2 best stadiums for staging speedway in Australia are the
Wayville Showground in Adelaide and the Ekka in Brisbane. Both are likely
to be ineligible however on different grounds; the Ekka is too narrow (only
9 Metres wide) whereas Wayville is possibly too large (more along the lines
of Longtrack proportions).

In terms of present venues which consistently dish up quality racing, it
would be hard to go past the Newcastle Motordrome. This however is unlikely
to get a guernsey because of a) inadequate spectating facilities, b) shape
(it is a huge D), and c) it is not in a capital city.

One cannot help but think that if Australia is fortunate enough to be
awarded a GP, it is likely to be a purpose built track for the occasion.

Any other comments/views by Australian speedway fans or Overseas visitors
who have been down under?

The FIM delegate who came to Australia last year and visited the new
Sydney Showground (not too sure of his name) liked what he saw.
Most certainly, the stadium is better than the Brisbane Exhibition =
Ground
and it leaves Melbourne's Olympic Park for dead too.
At the Showground - which is next door to the Sydney Olympic stadium -
the terraces and stands are all raised (similar to Bradford) and since =
it
was only built three years ago the facilities are first class.
The only problems have been the concrete fence and the diabolical =
shape
of the track. However the new air fence would discount the concrete,
this necessitating a new track to be cut further infield.
My mail suggests there is a very good chance that the RAS (owners) =
would
allow a new track to be cut, particularly as there are no drains.
Capital city, yes, but out of Melbourne or Sydney I suggest that the =
latter
has the inside running on 2001.

They already miss all meetings from the Thursday to GP day now! I
think that with the expansion of the GPs and the fact that the riders
consider them their number 1 priority anyway (as proven by how many of
them ride when they are too injured for league meetings), league
speedway both here and in Sweden will have to deal with this soon -
perhaps having squads or as I said before, separate events during GP
weeks.

Well done Bryn for considering the paying public - it's a pity that
'promoters' do not. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels we are
taken for granted when we see televised meetings going ahead when a
league match would have been called off and much more effort put into
presentation, with interviews etc.- but not for league meetings!

Keep up the good work,

Karl

Brett, it is difficult to speculate where a GP round could be held in
Australia. With regard to the air fence, (which is a magnificent safety
feature) I cannot see any promoter being able to afford it. I am lead to
believe it is very expensive. Can someone confirm. Having just viewed the
Swedish GP I'd like to put in my view regarding the exclusions. It was
certainly obvious to my eye that Mark Loram was the offender in the last
race, but to me, Jason Crump was looking a bit untidy before colliding with
Gollob earlier in the meeting. Yes, I will admit Gollob moved out but I
think it was a difficult one to call. Will referees eventually have access
to video replays? One thing I noticed, which infuriates me, is spectators
have those stupid air horns at Swedish tracks, like in England. Honestly,
if they allowed them into the tracks in Australia, no one would attend. At
my last meeting in Coventry I swore I'd never go to another English track,
you simply could not hear the commentator or results. Why is this annoying
practice allowed? You can't tell me it makes for a pleasant night at the
speedway.

Weeeelll......you have a point Brett.

The Wayville track is way too long
The Ekka is too narrow, but that is not necessary a problem. It has the =
spectator-facilites, it`s in a big town, but some major changes to the =
track is needed. The concrete walls have to go, and the track needs to =
be wider and less round. If that can be done don`t count it out.

A purpose built track is not necessary the best way to go, as the tarmac =
usually is crap.

Don`t count out Gosford. The track is probably the best one in Aussie =
(needs to be slightly wider), and if Tappy can go through with the =
changes he has planned, it could be a good stadium. One drawback is that =
FIM for next season as far as I have heard ONLY will go for tracks which =
can take 20-50 000 spectators. This again means that we will loose one =
of the rounds in the Nordic countries, and that Vojens, Lindk=F6ping and =
Coventry wil be out of the questions. Roumor has it that Aussie, Las =
Vegas and Barcelona are hot prospects for next years GP.

I`ll bet ya, one ound will be held in Aussie next season !

If these rumours are correct, one has to ask why the GP promoters are going
for such large stadiums when the average attendance is only about 15,000
per GP (and that figure is much lower if you exclude the Polish GPs)? By
all means expand the series to new venues, but don't neglect the places
which provide the hardcore support.
