I spoke with Foxtel today, they indicated that they were never sure of
having the rights to screen the Rugby hence the programming of the
speedway. At the last minute they got the rights and so we lucked out. I
reckon it was planned, programme something that no one will worry about if
it's cancelled. I urge you all to protest please. The programmed show
will now be shown on 24th July at 11.30 pm. I said, it was an emornous
effort for my parents to stay up till 8.30 pm how the bl...... hell are
they going to stay up till 11.30!! (My parents being over 80).

Former National Champion Chris Manchester won his first Scratch Main of the
season in front of a large crowd that saw a lot of exciting racing at Costa
Mesa.
Bobby Schwartz took the lead from the pole and looked to have control as he
exited turn two but Manchester used the outside dirt to gain momentum and
passed Schwartz on the back straight. Schwartz stayed low while Manchester
continued to use the outside to gain control of the lead at the close of lap
one. While Schwartz was chasing Manchester, Shawn McConnell and Dukie
Ermolenko battled side-by-side for third place. The battles continued
throughout the race, but Schwartz was unable to catch the former Overseas
Champion and McConnell held on for third place. Eddie Castro was fifth.
Manchester's victory ended a season-long struggle to break through the
invisible barrier that has been keeping him from a Scratch Main victory. He
has been impressive in his heats and semis but hasn't been able to put it
together in the main event until Saturday Night. Manchester's victory may be
a sign of things to come as the second half of the season approaches.
A notable absence from the Scratch Main field was Charlie "The Edge" Venegas.
The man who has won five of the nine Southern California Scratch Mains and
half of the main events failed to transfer from his scratch heat. Venegas
missed the start but was second to Andy Northrup and in a transfer position
when Schwartz made a spectacular ride around the outside to pass both
Northrup and Venegas and take the lead and a victory that received a standing
ovation from the large crowd. Northrup held off Venegas and subsequently
kept him from moving up in the program.
Jim Estes took a hard-earned victory in the Handicap Main event after holding
off Charlie Venegas the final three laps. Danny Perkins started at the tapes
with the rest of the eight-man field at least 40 yards behind him. Perkins
took the lead with the rest of the pack quickly trying to catch him. Estes
was the lone 40 yard rider with six riders behind him and was assuredly in
for a long eight laps. Venegas was able to get into third place on the third
lap when he passed Randy DiFrancesco. Estes now had to catch Perkins while
simultaneously holding Venegas back. He was up to the challenge as he passed
Perkins on the fifth lap to assume the lead. Venegas was unable to gain any
ground until they took the white flag and Venegas put a wheel under Estes as
they entered turn one. Estes remained cool under the pressure and actually
pulled away from Venegas as they exited turn two the final time. Venegas was
unable to close the gap and Estes took the checkered flag just ahead of
Venegas. DiFrancesco finished third, Brad Oxley was fourth, and Northrup was
fifth.
The Support Main provided the fans with some exciting racing with several
position changes throughout the race. Mark Hitchcock took the lead with
David Lynch and Tim Tucker right behind him. Lynch and Tucker battled for
second and passed each other several times. Hitchcock continued to lead
until the last lap when Lynch got underneath with Tucker right behind.
Tucker tried to force Lynch into a mistake but Lynch was up to the task and
took his second Support Main victory of the season.
John Stunkard was the only participant of the Support B Main Event on the 10
yard line and used that position to hold back the five 20 yard riders
throughout the race to take a wire-to-wire victory.
Costa Mesa will host two races this week during the Annual Orange County
Fair. Costa Mesa will return to its roots with a Friday Night program along
with sidecars, BMX jumpers, and Freestyle Motocross Jumpers featuring World
Famous Seth Enslow. The evening will coincide with the opening night of the
fair. On Saturday Night will be the annual Fair Derby which is one of
America's prestigious speedway events. Mike Faria will return from Northern
California to defend his Fair Derby title.

road accident and is layed up in a Brisbane Hospital in Intensive Care.
It's believed he is yet to regain consciousness. Ricky has been making
tremendous progress in the sport lately but will now need much support

After the meeting SVEMO awarded this mach to Kumla as
Frede Schott is not actually an =D6rnarna contracted rider, but is
actually contracted to their sister club, Vetlanda. Therefore =D6rnarna
were nor eligible to have the rider replacement facility, and those
rider replacement points were take away ( 7 points I believe),
consequently giving Kumla the win.
I am sure that Jonas Holmqvist will have more news on this,
currently he is on the island of Gotland having a rest, and enjoyed
an excellent meeting, with plenty of overtaking, on Tuesday night
where Bysarna beat Vetlanda in a crucial match at the top of the
alSvenskan league. Top scorers on the night were Tomas Topinka
for Bysarna, with 14 from 5 ( All of his heat wins were from the
back, three of them in spectacular style) and John Jorgensen for
Vetlanda with 14 from 7.

1997 World Champion Greg Hancock made a triumphant return to the Gold Country
Fairgrounds in Auburn by winning the Scratch Main to complete a sweep of the
scratch side of the program.
Hancock took the lead from his pole position and as the field exited turn two
Mike Faria was close behind. Hancock led at the close of lap one, but Faria
was no entrenched in battle for second with Charlie Venegas and Billy
Janniro. Janniro was able to squeeze by Faria and assume control of second
place. The battle for second allowed Hancock to stretch his lead to a
comfortable four bikelengths. Janniro was never able to mount a challenge as
Hancock cruised to the victory. Janniro was second, Venegas was third, and
Faria was fourth.
Hancock also qualified for the Handicap Main but was unable to duplicate the
success that he achieved on the scratch side of the program. This is not to
say that it didn't go without a valiant effort.
The six qualifiers for the Handicap Main started from either the 30 yard line
or the 50 yard line. This provided two distinct battles going into turn one.
Southern California native Dukie Ermolenko, Ian Ferris, and Robert Curry
lined up on the 30, while Hancock, Venegas, and Janniro were in the back.
Ermolenko was first into turn one and immediately began to open up ground on
the field. Janniro beat fellow backmarkers Venegas and Hancock to turn one.
Hancock went extremely wide and was dead last on the first lap. Ermolenko
was making the race a runaway as Janniro moved into third and began to
challenge for second. Meanwhile, Hancock was making up lost ground from the
back. On lap four Janniro went very wide in attempt to pass Ferris for
second allowing Hancock to get by and mount his own challenge on Ferris.
Ermolenko took an easy victory while Hancock passed Ferris on the final
corner to take second. Janniro finished fourth, Venegas was fifth, and Curry
was last.
Chris Kerr was lined up by himself at the tapes but had a strong field behind
him in the Second Division Main. Current Junior National Champion Eric
Carillo led the charge behind Kerr into turn one and immediately set his
sights on the lead. Kerr rode a very smooth race as Carillo slowly began to
close ground. At the white flag Carillo was within striking distance but was
unable to pressure Kerr into making a mistake. 16 year old Kerr took the
victory ahead of Carillo, Matt King finished third, and Mark Adams finished
fourth.
Billy Hiles recovered from a fall to win his heat race and then came from the
back of the field to take the Third Division Main ahead of Greg Hooten and
Ron Woodsford.
The Juniors provided a lot of exciting racing with Bryan Yarrow coming from
the 40 yard line to take the lead and then held off J.J. Martynse to win the
First Division Junior Main. Josh Newby was victorious in the Second Division
Junior Main with a wire-to-wire win. Tom Fehrman led the Third Division
Junior Main for three laps before falling allowing Paul Johnson to take the
victory ahead of Amanda English.
