I am really struggling to come to terms with the "amazing" decision to
allow a Wild Card (Jason Lyons) to become a straight substitute for Gollob
and start the meeting in Heats 11-14.

I would think Ryan Sullivan (in particular) and Peter Karlsson, the 3rd
placed men in Heats 19 and 20 in Wroclaw would be flabbergasted at this.

Apart from the reason that the change took place very late in the day and
thus it was "too late" to amend the printed programme, I can think of NO
LOGICAL REASON why this was allowed to happen.

Seeded spots should have to be earned from a previous GP or from a top 8
spot at the end of the previous season.

Can anyone shed any light on this????

Someone else suggested tongue in cheek that because Lyons finished 4th that
Gollob can take his spot at Vojens.

I would doubt that should be allowed either, but after the above decision
who knows what the FIM are likely to do.

The rules of the GP are not set in concrete. For example at some GP's the
semi final winners have tossed a coin for choice of gates in the final. At
other GP's the lowest riding number gets first choice and no coin toss
takes place.

The rules should be CONSISTENT.

Sensible replies gladly received.

The other thing that hits me between the eyes in this GP was once again the
early elimination (in heats 5 and 6) of riders who have failed to fire a
shot in the GP for the last couple of years. It is obvious they are not up
to the standard required, yet if they survive the GP Challenge they will be
back again. In my eyes the riders who come 19th or below should not get a
spot in the Challenge. The series should be for the Elite riders, not for
riders who it is patently obvious are just making up the numbers or getting
in the road. The fact that two wild card riders made the Final, and Wild
Card riders in other GP's over the last few years have also made the final,
is indicative of the fact that in some cases there are riders outside the
GP who are better than some of those inside it. The qualifying system is
nowhere near good enough and needs addressing.

Bernd had an engine failure when he was in the lead in his 3rd heat and
he had an engine failure in the final heat (rumors: flat tire). He wouldn't
have won the meeting when he would have won the final ...

In reply to Glenn:

Totally agree that the wild card system seems very hit and miss and the
seeded spot should have gone to one of the series GP riders. Well done
to Martin Dugard and Jason Lyons for reminding the GP controllers & FIM
that the GP riders are not necessarily the best in the world.

On the point of riders at the lower end of the ranks I once again agree
totally that once in the GP series it is too easy to stay in - you only
have to get through one meeting(the GP challenge), unlike riders outside
the system who have several hard meetings on different tracks to even
qualify for the challenge!

It has been said that som of these riders always take two bikes to each
GP - one for each race!

Cheers

Karl

Grasstrack Schwarme/D 30th July

1. Robert Barth D 45555 24
2. Kelvin Tatum GB 55544 23
3. Matthias Kroger D 54453 21
4. Anne v/d Helm NL 44332 16
5. Theo Pijper NL 33341 14
6. Shane Parker AUS 23230 10
7. Jeremy Donaster GB T142 7
8. Ralf Loding D 3211 7
9. Stephan Katt D 2022 6
10.Vladimir Kolodij UA 1111 4
11.Sirg Schutzbach D E2NN 2
12.Kenneth Borgehaugh N 0000 0

Barth was beaten just once by Kroger and won on the grippy
grastrack of Schwarme without problems. It rained the days before but track
preparation was done very well, track record was broken twice, once by
kroger and finaly by Barth (127.84km/h old one: 126.36km/h from Tatum in
97) Tatum was passed twice by Barth and during the final heat he got his
steelshoe in his backwheel:
some broken spokes, damaged rim and bend steelshow on the left (!) side.
Furthermore his silencer broke so he lost some horsepower too.

Kroger is getting better and better since he is using the engines of Marcel
Gerhard. Both dutch riders performed quite well and were happy with their
result. Shane Parker did a good performance on his new bike he bought
from the retired German rider Gunther Bunning. Though he could have done
a bit better but was packed with mud in one heat and couldn't see a thing
for a short time.
Donky just had bad luck, he was excluded for tape touching in his first
heat when his bike rolled into a rut. GP rider from Norway Borgenhaugh
couldn't get used to the track at all, hopefully he will improve on the
upcoming two GPs on grass (Abingdon/GB and Eenrum/NL) and get back
to the good performance he showed in Stadskanaal/NL during the
qualification round.

Subject: Wolves v Coventry - Report
Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 23:16:20 +0100

Excellent match, very tense and exciting - would have made superb TV.
Coventry are always dangerous opponents at Monmore with Hamill and Hancock
in the team, and a stronger all round Wolves team was unable to pull away.

Match decided in a thrilling last heat. Coventry needed a 5-1 to draw,
Hancock gates from Lyons and Hamill. As Hamill tries to find a way past
Lyons, Ronnie Correy produces a superb outside burst to take Hamill, then
moved past Lyons into 2nd. This proved decisive as Hamill passed Lyons on
the last lap, but Ronnie held on to the vital 2nd place.

Track looked good early on but dried quickly on a warm night.

J.Lyons - excellent guest performance. 100% effort as usual, vital win in
Heat 13 over Horace and Herbert.

A. Skornicki - Another fine performance, paid 9 from 4 rides and a
celebratory donut for his race win.

J. Jensen - Looked quick early on, very close to a Heat 15 nomination.

R.Correy - Wolves match winner, his wins over Hamill in heats 14 and 15 were
vital.

N.Pedersen - Lost to Scott Robson, beat Hancock, and had a tapes exclusion -
life is never dull when Nicki's around...

W.Carter - Led Jorgensen for 3 laps in heat 2 but made a mistake. Struggled
afterwards.

R. Povazhny - Deserved more, another battling performance

G. Hancock - Always class at Monmore. Not quite unbeatable!

St. Robson - Dreadful. Bike problems, never impressed

L. Richardson - Rather erratic. 2 wins, 2 lasts.

S. Tacey - Very poor - beat only Wayne Carter.

B. Hamill - 2 easy wins, then 5 points from 4 rides! Never far behind,
delighted to see Hamill and his twin brother beaten by Wolves at last!

J. Jorgensen - 2 wins, 2 lasts. Unlucky not to get more rides.

Sc Robson - Much better than usual at Monmore. Rode the track well in his
first 2 rides and beat Pedersen and Povazhny in heat 4.

All the best,
Mark.
