Paul has pointed out to me that the date for 2/2/2000 is incorrect.
The actual date is of course 2/12/2000.
A typing error on my part for which I apologise.
Fox Sports cancelled the speedway again last night as well, in preference
to a replay of the weekends Rugby League Quarter Finals. Next telecast
Friday 11/8 at 7:30pm.

Folks
I was just having a look at the current GP standings as there has been a
lot of debate recently about the qualifying system and the GP Series itself.
As I look at the standings at present we find a real cluster of riders
around the 10th position.

I am not PICKING on these 3 guys, I am just trying to highlight a point
that the SYSTEM is not right.
Jimmy Nilsen this year has had a relatively poor season by his own
standards, yet he is 10th place in the series, and he has only once managed
to get himself into semi finals. Likewise Greg Hancock and Mikael Karlsson
have had similar seasons and only been in the semi finals once.
Tomasz Gollob currently in 9th place with 43 points has only raced in 3
GP's yet he has a comfortable margin over those currently competing for
that 10th spot. This sort of proves my earlier point that 10 riders
directly qualifying for the next season can in fact reward a rider who at
best has had a mediocre season. All of these riders have proved in the past
that they are up to GP Standard, but this year are struggling. Whoever
eventually lobs in 10th place is back in next years series when really
their 2000 form does not warrant it.
We must make the GP's a better showpiece than what they SUPPOSEDLY are at
present. Cut the direct qualifiers to around 6-8 and make it harder for the
riders who OBVIOUSLY can't cut the mustard to re-enter. The GP Challenge at
the moment allows an "easy" passage for riders 11-18 in a series to win or
come second twice from an inside gate to re enter a series where clearly
they were not competitive in the previous season. At present there are a
number of riders in the series who clearly are just making up the numbers.
At least Sky Television and Keith Huewen in particular have stopped waxing
lyrical about one particular Brit who try as he might, can't keep up with
the top stars.
If we are going to persist with a 24 rider GP Challenge then perhaps the
format has to be a little different.
Either one of these two plans.
1) Split the 8 seeded spots for the GP Challenge in 3 directions. Instead
of the riders placed 11-18 in the series, cut it back to riders placed
11-14, then allocate two spots to riders placed 2 and 3 in the
Inter-Continental Final, and two spots to riders placed 2 and 3 in the
Continental Final. Make the "non performers" at the bottom end of the GP
standings EARN their spot back in. I for one am sick and tired of seeing a
particular rider back in the series each year when he quite obviously is
unable to compete with the top riders. I'll give you a clue, he has not
survived the Heat 5/6 cut in any GP this year, yet come GP Challenge time
this Houdini will escape again.
2) Stage the GP Challenge in a better way.
Either have a semi final the night before with 16 riders over 20 heats,
with the best 8 riders (open to debate what the seeding criteria is) seeded
to the main meeting the next night. 8 riders to qualify from the semi final
joining the 8 seeds in a 16 rider 20 heat traditional formula, where riders
get 5 rides to prove their worth. This way riders won't have an easy
passage back in by winning twice in a red helmet.
All in all I like the knockout type GP formula, but I believe it is not
suitable for a GP Challenge and until such time as we stage better
qualifying meetings the best of the best won't be able to get in. The odds
favour the guys who are already in the series to return next year. It
should be made tougher for them.
I welcome some sensible debate on this.

Subject: Alessandro Milanese

The accident with Alessandro Milanese happened during the training.
Anne van der Helm gated first and Christian Hulshorst tried to pass him.
He was far too fast to do it and crashed into his bike. Both fell and
Alessandro couldn't them and flew over them.
Hulshorst just suffered some sort of concussion and van der Helm has a
broken collarbone. Milanese got a broken tigh and injuries inside his body.
He was taken to hospital in Melsungen and then to Kassel.
A lot of riders said after the meeting they won't ride again when Hulshorst
is in the meeting.

Agree with Mark wholeheartedly that last night was a joke. First - the track
- apparently a decision was made at 6.30 that the meeting would go ahead -
when i arived at 7.15 the track still had standing water and the riders were
in civvies standing on it looking like it was a no hoper! If the track was
declared fit at 6.30 why wasn't the remedial work done then? As to the
Corrie/Wiltshire decision the ref was a total XXXXhead and obviously a
Hamill supporter (letting all the jumping at the tapes by Nilsen and 10
minute two minutes go on)
Where the hell do they dig up these refs from? Is there some means by which
we can complain and actually get something done??? Are they never reviewed?
Or are they reviewed by people just as imbecilic?
Re Peterborough - yes, I know that is the very night our team will need
support if that match is to go ahead, but what is the point? It isn't the
Wolves we'll be going to see, it will be Ipswich versus Peterborough, and
its not as if the two witches even come close to comparing with Jesper and
Nicky. Bloody Joke.
I'm getting ready to chuck it. It is so unprofessional - the whole thing -
people not being able to say what they think on the inetrnet and on
independent web sites, refs who are too scared or stupid to call it right,
riders who can't be bothered to get dirty or turn up with one (crap) bike,
fighting, pathetic crowing from managers and promotors, crap management from
others (Jan knows all about that)
Why should I chuck my money and time at that?

Latest on Sam from the track tonight is that he is likely to make a very
late decision on whether to ride or not at the Inter Continental Final. He
may not decide until the Friday practice, or even later. This was announced
by Nigel Pearson - don't think Sam was there. Reading between the lines, he
is clearly determined to ride but the injury isn't healed properly - so who
knows?
Wolves are at Peterborough on Friday - or at least some of them are!
Tonight's programme explained that the original date for the IC Final was
Sunday 13th. This was moved forward a day back in April, with the practice
on Friday. With Sam, Jesper and Nicki all involved, Wolves requested that
Peterborough move the match to another date, even offering to give up a
Monday to go there. Peterborough have refused, and the match goes ahead on
Friday without Ermolenko, Jensen and Pedersen - who are replaced by Jan
Andersen, Toni Svab and RR.
This is plainly ridiculous. Neither team is in the running to win the
league - surely Peterborough can't be this desperate for the points? What
price entertainment for the paying public? Surely fans of both sides would
rather see two full strength sides? The Panthers are within their rights to
insist the match goes ahead, just as the travelling fans are within their
rights to stay at home! I certainly won't be going, and many more Wolves
fans have said the same tonight... what a shame. Any comments from
Peterborough fans?

The three UK based riders Grant McDonald/GB, Travis McGowan/AUS and
Kevin Doolan/AUS had a car crash in Germany. They were returning from the U21
semifinal in Norrkoping/S. Grant McDonald was taken to hospital, the other two
were not hurt.
