Comments:
Poor crowd with a lack of atmosphere (thought I was at Kirky Lane at one
point). Spotted in the pits Webbo (mail me at work with an address for the
book), spotted lurking on the terraces Geoff (smug as ever) and David Damm
(Hammo's knee ligaments look OK to me). Spotted in the bar Rene Aas looking
glum but walking OK, Karl 'Speedway Star Letters' Marshall - no not me,
despite what some of you think :)) Someone commented earlier in the evening
that anyone who works for management is not a real fan. Interesting comment
but not necessarily true.
Sheffield
What a difference a bit of rain in June/July makes. We are beginning to get
a team back. Scott however looks very short of confidence(?) and Robbie
proved what a gating tart he really is in his race with Werner (Geoff take
note). Nice to see Hammo back, but is it the end for poor James I ask ?
Hull
Its a good job Robbo was trying for the rest were definately lacking. I
would have though Dickens would have been better than he was. Hull used
Hermy in place of Alan Grahame who never really got going.
Long Eaton
Certainties to win this group. Paul Lee looked really good. Justin Elkins
never goes well at Sheffield.
Donkeys (as Neil calls them)
Sadler looked the pick of them, Woodifield never looked comfortable and
Carter and Morris were Carter & Morris. If they close and this is looking a
real possibility now can Sheffield have Sadler to pep up the bottom end of
the team???
Running Scores in our group as best I can reckon are :
LE 99, Skeg 82, Hull 78, Stoke 67, Sheff 57
So Long Eaton need only 4 points to qualify at Stoke and Hull need 25 pts to
join them and knock Berwick out. I'm sure the weakened Sheffield side will
be able to help them to that sort of score!

Good news was that there was a crowd of over 1000 people. That's what
happens when I stay away. Actually it was the county fair, and entry to
the speedway was free. Let's hope they all come back next week.
Other good news from this end is that Victorville speedway started up
again last Friday. I am still trying to track down the results.

Agreed. Should be a close finish with the Monarchs loosing 50-40
away to the racers recently, although the tail end of the
Monarchs has improved somewhat since then. Especially Paul Gould.

Are you talking about the first leg? That was 51-39 to the

Louis beat Wigg in run off for bonus
Sorry, no scorers as I can't seem to locate my programme.
Although this was a totally crap match in terms of racing, the closeness
of the result together with a copious supply of alcohol made for an
interesting evening. Scores were level going into the nominated heats,
but the Witches scored 2 5-1's and a 4-2 to level the aggregate scores.
Louis then easily beat Wigg to claim the bonus, despite Wigg's bike being
much faster in a straight line. This really upset the Deadbeet's fans on
the third bend, who were so stupid they actually thought Wigg had a
chance of winning!! This caused the banter to turn into arguments, and
then personal abuse - just like the old days really!! Certainly makes a
change to have a bit of atmosphere at Foxhall, as opposed to the usual
silence.
I am absolutely amazed Lynn went for Wigg in the run off, although he had
previously gated to three wins, he never looked comfortable, and even if
he had outgated Louis, you would have put money on the Ipswich man
passing him. Personally I would have gone for Brhel, who is very quick
when in front, or Parker who rides a superb defensive line. Both are much
more difficult to pass than Wigg.
As I said, it was fairly processional stuff on a dry track(why no
water?), Nicholls, Louis, Parker and Howe being the only riders involved
in much passing. Doncaster was up to his usual tricks, racing AGAINST his
team mates, his blocking manouvres against Howe in particular were quite
superb - pity he could not repeat it in his next race when Parker was
chasing him. A section of the crowd are really getting on Doncaster's
back now, but I suppose he'll still be in the team for another decade or
so ALTHOUGH there was a rumour circulating last night linking him with
Reading - wishful thinking perhaps?
Must mention the sportsmanship of Steve Johnston in heat ?? After missing
the gate Johnno went down on the second bend, but instead of staying
down(he had a pretty good chance of all four), he got up and removed his
bike from the track.
Finally, there are mentions of team changes at Ipswich, but by sheer
coincidence(!) it's just a few days since the green sheets and they are
strangled by the averages. Well there's a surprise!!
Cheers for Now,
Neil

How likely now is the switch of Skeggy to Ryde?
As Sharon posted earlier in the week, messrs Oakes/Gudgeon now have a
difficult decision to make, with the 1,000 or so crowd at Ryde on Monday
insufficient to cover the costs of staging on the island and leave a margin
of profit for the promoters, largely due to the high travel costs incurred
by the teams in travelling to/from the IoW.
Best chance would seem to be a sale of the promotion to someone on the
island, who could both run and market the speedway locally, which might
just make all the difference.
Another option might be for the Skeggy promotion to move to Ryde and then
give their promotional rights away to someone for free, as this might well
be cheaper than facing either further losses or the penalties imposed for
withdrawing from the league in mid-season.
Irrespective, the promised decision "Within 48 hours" has now been extended
until next Monday (at least).
Perhaps the plight of Skegness (and London last season) will teach any
potential promoters to do proper research beforehand in future before
jumping in with both feet.
Both Peter Oakes and Terry Russell are members of the BSPA Management
Committee.
Allan Ham at Bradford is also on the MC, and also losing his shirt every
week due to poor attendances.
What an indictment of three of the men charged with the task of running
British Speedway.

The jinxed Yorkshire and Midland Qualifying group of the National Fours has
finally come to life after Sheffield's win in the much delayed home round.
While it appears that Long Eaton have the round sewn up, the poor performance
by Hull has left open the possibility of Berwick or even Stoke qualifying as
the highest scoring losers.
Hull now need to score at least 24 points in the final round at Stoke to stop
Berwick from qualifying. Stoke can also qualify if they score at least 35 and
have an 11 point margin over Hull. The presence of Long Eaton and a much
stronger Sheffield team will make either of these scenarios more difficult.
John Lowe
PS: Congratulations to Oxford for getting through to the Cup Final. This
offers a big incentive to Edinburgh should they hold their lead over Reading
in the away leg. Edinburgh appear to have a better record at Oxford than any
other away track while Monarch's Cup record against Hull is decidedly dodgy.

Entertainment Value: 8 (but not just for the racing)
Referee: M Posselwhite (who?) nothing to do
Presentation: Tedious as ever, although they did try to build up some
atmosphere for the Bonus Point run-off
On reflection, this was a fascinating match, whch did a lot to revive
the old hatred between the two camps (I certainly did as much as I
could!).
Ipswich had an eight point lead after 6 heats, threw it away by Heat 12,
and then produced a storming finish to get a run-off for the Match Bonus
Point, which was achieved comfortably by Louis.
The racing was by no means brilliant - the track preparation doesn't
seem to involve as much water as it used to - so although there was a
lot of shale on the outside line, it didn't seem to offer much of an
advantage.
The Witches went ahead with a 5-1 by Louis and Svab in Heat 4. Tacey
came off the second bend really hard and clattered into Wigg, who
retired a lap later miles adrift at the back.
Doncaster lurched to the first of two vital heat wins in race 5, with
Topinka coming underneath Howe (who found that the outside line was not
too profitable) for a shared heat.
Another 5-1, by Johnston and Nicholls over Parker & Brhel put the
Witches 8 up after 6 heats.
Bizarre Heat 8 with Brhel excluded under two minutes when he shed a
chain while going round to the start. Although a spare bike appeared
for him, he walked across the centre green and was excluded while he was
half way across (would he have made it if he had run?!). It seemed good
news for Ipswich, as Tacey came in for Brhel, but then Shaun actually
gated, and Parker settled in behind him. We then witnessed Doncaster at
his abject worst, as he tried to make it look like he was racing, but
succeeded only in blocking Howe! Ben eventually throttled off on the
third lap, and the Deadbeets secured a very slow and unexpected 5-1.
Although Howe had a poor night by his usual Foxhall standards, I'm
absolutely sure that he would have given Parker a real challenge - Shane
must have wondered how he went unchallenged for the four laps while
watching Tacey wobble round in front of him.
Wigg won heat 9, with Tacey actually leading Nicholls and Johnston for a
lap, but they pissed past him (one either side) without any probs.
Nicholls superior cornering technique (wigg doesn;t have a cornering
technique at Ipswich), helped him make up loads of ground on Wigg, but
not quitre enough.
Louis won 10, and this time it was the Deadbeets who did the passing -
Topinka easily slipping past Doncaster, then Parker chasing and forcing
his way through later on.
Heat 12, and Johnston was (unusually) a victim of a tough first/second
bend, sliding off. I saw no problem with it, and the ref let it
continue. Svab was well adrift of Hurry and Wigg, so suddenly the
Deadbeets had drawn level.
As usual, we had the crap interval, with 15 minutes of nothing for the
fans, but it seemed to fire up the Witches, who got their act together
and destroyed the Deadbeets over the last three heats.
Nicholls and Svab gated to a simple 5-1 over Tacey and Topinka.
Doncaster gated, and rode a hard first bend off gate two to block Brhel
(gate 1). It really is amazing how Donkey can be totally crap for two
races, and then come alive again. Howe was all over the back of Parker
for a couple of laps, finally producing a brilliant pass to get the 4-2
(and vindicating my views on Heat 8).
And so to the last heat. Johnston (more like usual) won a very hard
first/second bend battle, taking Wigg wide. Wigg though had the
straight line power on Louis, and regained second place. Louis though
was not finished and they rode side fby side for a lap and a half before
Louis finally nudged ahead. It was a cracking effort, as Wigg seemed
faster, but Louis gained all the ground on the bends. I felt a bit
sorry for PAul Hurry, who rode well all night, but was just a spectator
in fourth place in this one.
And so to the run-off. Bugger-all choice for Buster Chapman, as none of
his bunch looked consistent enough. He plumped for Wigg, but Louis
outgated and out-thought him for four very tense laps. The crowd was
strangely silent for the race - sensing that Louis would probaly have
his usual run-off engine failure. It was almost a sigh of relief rather
than a cheer when he crossed the finishing line!
Very satisfying result for the Witches, when they looked capable of even
throwing the match away. Buster Chapman must have been really pissed
off, which is delightful!
----------------------
A team called Ipswich is at Bradford on Saturday - it will lineup as
follows:
Chris Louis
Antonin Svab
Ben Howe
Mark Lemon (Splendid Guest for Doncaster on Longtrack Trophy trail)
Shane Parker (Adequate guest for Johnston, ditto above)
James Grieves (Inadequate guest for Nicholls on Under-21 trail)
-----------------------
Buck Blair took part in scratch races following the main match between
Ipswich and the Deadbeets. He looked very useful, and had no problem
beating our AL riders. He was beaten in one race by Kevin Teager, but
was simply outgated, and then followed the blue-groove on a totally
ungraded bone dry track. Apparently he can't ride in the AL as he's a
foreigner, and is unlikely to get a work permit as he's not a top grade
American rider.
One possible alternative is to ride on a British licence ..... however,
I'm told that Frenchman Patrice Deloubes had taken out a British licence
but is still unable to ride in the AL (at Oxford) because he's foreign
..... however, the word is that he's threatening to take legal action.
Any news from Oxford?
I can understand the AL not wanting an influx of foreign riders, but
there has got to be scope for some - especailly if they are prepared to
ride on a British licence. In these days of free trade, I can't see
anything stopping EU riders from riding anyway, although they might draw
the line at American or Australian riders. Even so, if they are
prepared to ride for nothing, why not give them a go?
Cheers,
Dave Love

I listened to the match live on local radio (Thames Valley) and they did a good
job, although the commentator was not very conversant with speedway. I suspect
Oxford were lucky on the night. The turning point was definetely the crash
which seemed to scare the commentator to hell. It was nice to win , but I would
have preferred to have done it fair and square without the crash. Incidentally
I believe my comments at the start of the season regarding the folly of 6 man
teams are now beginning to ring true for many teams

the "slick" condition of the Ipswich lately. He said it was due to the
fact that they could not buy the right type of shale at the moment. Last
years had a high clay content, and held on to moisture and bound
together better to produce grip.
This years is low on clay content, and tends to act like sand.

Exactly, they should allow anyone to ride in the AL. It's not as
if there are millions of would-be riders queueing up for rides. Anyone
should be accomodated.

Nick,
This wasn't a case of the first points limit but an example of the,
then, just ending rider-control. Reading were judged to be too strong
with Boleys re-arrival in England (he started the season late because
of trouble with the Polish authorities, I seem to remember). As such
they were commanded (again, I think by the SCB not BSPA) to release a
rider - which turned out to be Proch rather than the more expected
release of 'Banger' Jansson (how is he now? - anyone know?).
This lead to a rather unsettled side culminating in very heavy
defeats at both Bristol (not a favourite track of many of the riders
at that time) and Exeter, as well as several dropped home points.
Love and kisses,
Steve
PS. If we CAN beat Edinburgh in the semi then Oxford should be easier
in the final.

You didn't look at FBB/fixtures.htm did you ;)
I thought it strange you'd not mailed me to arrange a meet.
Wait till the play-offs :))

Sorry Roger
I meant to type Exeter- as we won at Exeter!
Sorry for the confusion I seem to have Edinburgh on the brain....

Poor old Donk!
That punch he threw at Clouting was the most aggression he's shown on track
for ages!!!!
The old boy couldn't join us - or any other Premier League track this year
- even
if he wanted to, as his starting average of 7.74 is above the maximum
permitted
in our humble League....
I dunno though maybe he could join Skegness if Oakesy bends a rule or
two!!!
(joke!!!! don't sue me...............)
Now that I read on text that Skeggy are thinking of relocating to St
Austell...
Does that mean the Ryde deal is off?
Sharon help us out here!
Cheers

The missing scores for the Ipswich v King's lynn clash:
Ipswich 50
C Louis 3 3 1+ 3 2+ 12+2
T Svab 0 2+ 2 1 2+ 7+2
B Howe 2 0 0 1+ 1 4+1
J Donkey 1+ 3 1 0 3 8+1
S Johno 3 3 1+ F 3 10+1
S Nicholls F 2+ 2 2 3 9+1
Kings Lynn 40
B Brhel 2 0 XM 3 2 7
S Parker 1+ 1 2+ 1+ 0 5+3
S Wigg 3 EF 3 3 1 10
S Tacey 0 1 3 0 0 1 5
T Topinka 2 1+ 0 2 0 5+1
P Hurry 1+ 2 3 2+ 0 8+2
Otherwise Neil's report was spot on.
And i'd have gone for Brhel in the BP run-off too. He's so inconsistent
he might have pulled it off. Wigg was OK but we've never seen the best
of him at Ipswich.
Interesting note - only one heat didn't generate a bonus point!
Buck Blair had a second-half spin - I assume he now (rightly) has
clearance to ride again.
Braintree club Grass Track scheduled for July 20 has been switched to
August 10. Guess which previously free date I re-arranged a cycle
speedway match for? :-(
A digest-archive-only user has asked me to make a point. He accesses the
archive at Kim Gregory's site (much faster link than to Poland) but says
it can be up to 10 days out of date. I appreciate the effort in
maintaining it, but maybe an automated system is needed now the list is
closed to newcomers.
