Scottish Cup
Lothian Arena, Armadale
Having stopped the rot at Stoke after five successive defeats, Monarchs beat
Glasgow by eight points in the first leg of the Scottish Cup at Armadale
leaving the match nicely poised for the second leg at Shawfield.
With the current set-up effectively dividing the year into pre-season
(Challenges and League Cup Qualifiers), main season (League matches, 4TT, and
Cup semi-finals and final), and post-season (play-offs), this match had a post
season 'feel' even though it is still in September. The night was windy and
cold with a hint of rain. This contributed to a smaller than usual crowd and a
rather 'flat' atmosphere despite some entertaining racing and a close match.
The Scottish Cup has always been a mystery to me and appears to be held
whenever Glasgow or Edinburgh have an 'open' week. Perhaps Robin could provide
us with some of the background to this competition?
Heat 1: Robert Eriksson, Neil Collins, Paul Gould, Will Beveridge [57.7]
Processional heat won from the tapes. (4-2) (4-2)
Heat 2: Mick Powell, Barry Campbell, Grant MacDonald, Blair Scott [58.4]
Kenny McKinna has a clutch failure and hit the tapes. Barry Campbell came in
and scored a good second behind Mick Powell. (2-4) (6-6)
Heat 3: Sean Courtney, Barry Campbell, Stewart McDonald [59.3]
Peter Carr was hit by Stewart McDonald coming out of the first bend and his
foot tangled with the rear wheel causing him to retire. Barry Campbell
responded by passing McDonald, who was on Mick Powell's bike for another
second place. (2-4) (8-10)
Heat 4: Robert Eriksson, Mick Powell, Paul Gould, Grant MacDonald [59.1]
While Robert Eriksson won easily, there was a great battle for second place
between Gould and Powell. (4-2) (12-12)
Heat 5: Blair Scott, Sean Courtney, Stewart McDonald, Kenny McKinna [60.1]
Blair Scott made a great start and as Kenny McKinna was attempting to join him
he fell at the third bend and remounted. Blair held on with no real problems.

Heat 6: Peter Carr, Neil Collins, Will Beveridge, Barry Campbell [58.3]
Peter Carr won from the tapes and Barry Campbell, after a poor start, could
make no impression. (3-3) (18-18)
Heat 7: Robert Eriksson, Sean Courtney, Stewart McDonald, Paul Gould [59.4]
Robert Eriksson kept up his record to win from Sean Courtney. Stewart McDonald
passed Paul Gould to ensure another tied heat. (3-3) (21-21)
Heat 8: Kenny McKinna, Neil Collins, Blair Scott, Will Beveridge [59.5]
Edinburgh edged ahead as Kenny McKinna collected his first points. Neil
Collins passed Blair Scott to prevent a maximum for the Monarchs. (4-2)

Heat 9: Peter Carr, Mick Powell, Grant MacDonald, Barry Campbell [59.3]
This race was notable only for the race for third place with MacDonald pipping
Campbell in a chase for the line. (3-3) (28-26)
Heat 10: Robert Eriksson, Will Beveridge, Stewart McDonald [59.9]
Eriksson missed the start as Blair Scott sped away only to 'wheely' over and
demolished the whole of the first/second bend fencing. Both bike and rider
were OK, but the fence..... In the re-run, with Scott excluded, Eriksson made
no mistake. (3-3) (31-29)
Heat 11: Kenny McKinna, Neil Collins, Grant McDonald, Barry Campbell [60.2]
A good race with McKinna gating but Collins coming back at him. Twice Collins
seemed to be ahead on the home straight and twice the wider riding McKinna
picked up enough grip to edge Collins out by the first bend. (3-3) (34-32)
Heat 12: Peter Carr, Sean Courtney, Mick Powell, Paul Gould [59.7]
Carr had an easy win while there was a great battle between Gould, Powell and
Courtney for second place. Gould never gave up attempting to pass Courtney and
was passed by Powell near the end. (3-3) (37-35)
Heat 13: Kenny McKinna, Blair Scott, Grant MacDonald, Stewart McDonald [60.2]
McKinna and Scott went ahead from the tapes, Stewart McDonald stalked Scott
for some time before edging ahead on the home straight only to go wide coming
out of the second bend and slipped to last place. (5-1) (42-36)
Heat 14: Neil Collins, Paul Gould, Will Beveridge [Awarded]
Neil Collins with a win from the back over Paul Gould after Blair Scott who
was fighting to regain the lead tried to demolish the second bend fence once
more and the race was stopped and awarded. (2-4) (44-40)
Heat 15: Peter Carr, Robert Eriksson, Mick Powell, Sean Courtney [59.9]
Carr gated and was joined by Eriksson by the end of the first lap to win ahead
of Powell. (5-1) (49-41)

Robert Eriksson is clearly back to his best and recorded a paid maximum. Peter
Carr was unlucky not to have been invited back and for Heat 3 to be re-run.
This probably cost him his maximum. Kenny McKinna was using Blair Scott's
spare engine and had his troubles despite coming off the back of a 15 at Stoke
on Saturday.
Paul Gould rode quite well for 4 points and missed out in Heat 12 after a
great effort. Barry Campbell did very well early on when he was left with the
responsibility by McKinna taping and Carr retiring. He faded after and was
beaten by Grant MacDonald (twice) and Will Beveridge. Blair Scott was good
with a win, a paid win and two spectacular falls.
Neil Collins gated badly but made a lot of passes of Edinburgh's second
strings. Mick Powell and Sean Courtney both had a good meeting. Stewart
McDonald appeared to have engine problems but made no impression and Glasgow
can be thankful that his partner Sean Courtney compensated. Grant MacDonald
looked very impressive only failing to score once. Will Beveridge, who has
reputedly ridden Armadale more times than some of the Edinburgh team produced
a typical performance.
Man of the match: Robert Eriksson for an immaculate paid maximum.
Most exciting rider: Neil Collins for more passes than the remaining riders
put together.
Most spectacular rider: Blair Scott
Second leg next Sunday at Shawfield. This is due to be televised by Sky
Scottish. It is possible that next Sunday's fixture may be taken over by the
play-off second leg assuming that Edinburgh do draw Glasgow.

the elit-league, and He say to Me that He looking forward to have

In 1998 at least two foreigners per team will be allowed, but it is
still possible that the number of foreigners will be unlimited.
Previously all new foreigners came on on an assessed 7.0 average. From
now on, Grand Prix riders will be given a 10.0 average, riders from the
British, Polish or Danish leagues will come in on 8.5 points and other
new foreigners will be awarded a 7.0 average. Another new thing is that
it will be possible to replace a foreign rider during the season. From
next season, the substitute foreigner will only be able to replace heat
leaders with an average of 7.0 or more. The points limit for the Elite
League will rise from 42.0 to 45.8 points.
The last date to sign Swedish riders is November 1. Three riders have
already changed clubs. Stefan Andersson leaves Team Svelux for
Vastervik. Jimmy Engman goes from Team Svelux to Getingarna. Martin
Svensson returns from Vastervik to old team Vargarna.

Ht 3: Adams profited from a Smith error to go inside him on the last lap.
Ht 10: Bowes overtook Masters for third.
Ht 11: Hancock and Wilson went either side of Karger for a 3-3 behind Nilsen.
Ht 12: Karger and Nilsen managed to squeeze Smith to the back, Nilsen
beating Jorgensen.
Ht 14: Bowes overtook Masters again.
Ht 15: Nilsen rode well to see off Louis and Hancock. Adams ef on lap 3.
Next fixture, probably - Coventry v Bradford on 12th October.

Since yesterday we know the finalists: Jutrzenka-Polonia Bydgoszcz
and Pergo Gorzow. These are the two teams who made the most
spectacular transfers before the season: Bydgoszcz bought Piotr
Protasiewicz and Gorzow - Tomasz Bajerski (for a record fee: 600,000
zloty).
Bydgoszcz smashed Torun who unexpectedly gave up without (almost)
any resistance. Even Jacek Gollob, riding with a broken collarbone,
just like Brian Andersen in the Polish GP, was unbeaten. Now I'm
happy I didn't feel like going there. BTW, my GP Challenge trip is
now very questionable.
BYDGOSZCZ 64 - TORUN 26
scorers: Bydgoszcz: T.Gollob 13+2, J.Gollob 11+1 (in 4 rides),
P.Protasiewicz 12 (with an ef), Cieslewicz 2, H.Gustafsson 12,

The other semi delivered a lot more drama. Pergo Gorzow eventually
defeated Polonia-Philips Pila 48:41, and, having lost in Pila a week
ago only 43:47, won 91:88 on aggregiate and will face Bydgoszcz in
the battle for gold. Pila's riders suffered 2 engine failures on
scoring places, but that's speedway. Gorzow were more fortunate on
the day and they go through.

SECOND DIVISION:
The qualifying spots were decided in the last round last Sunday. GKM
Grudziadz comfortably beat Lotos Gdansk 57:33 and took the first
place. Gdansk could still be at hope if Rybnik defeated their direct
rival - Ostrow. After a real thriller the match was drawn(!) 45:45.
In both nominateds Ostrow riders came from the back to keep their
chances alive. Ostrow will compete in the first league for thye
second time - now everyone there hopes the year 1998 will be
completely different from 1987 - which was a total disaster (all
matches lost).
The Polish team Cup took the Torun riders (47 pts) winning the final
on the home soil from Leszno (32), Wroclaw (31) and Gorzow (10). At
least one consolation!

Brief details this week.
Arena-Essex gained a comfortable victory over the Wasps in this challenge
match at Purfleet on Saturday.
Only the spectacular Craig Watson offered any real entertainment and Tommy
Palmer had one of his best home meetings of the season.
David Mason returned from injury in encouraging form with two race wins
although again struggled from the back.
Arena actually led from start to finish in this match making a change from
recent matches in which they have struggled early on.

Chris Brown - couldn't make Oxford yesterday (neither could many fans as I
understand). Another very poor performance from the Hammers away from home
- they have either been brilliant or rubbish and end of season blues seem
to be setting in already. It was very bad considering that the playoffs are
at stake - although we may make it anyway.
As far as I understand we may lose three riders next year - Wainwright,
Palmer and Mason. What we really need is someone with a lot of go in them
to brighten up the track action at Purfleet - someone along the lines of
Craig Watson who I have been very impressed with this year. He has produced
some excellent manouvres at Purfleet this year which isn't easy for someone
with relatively little experience.

I spoke with Ivan in August about our Italian rider Alessandro Dalla
Valle taking part in the series and we agreed that he could start
mid-October.
I faxed today to Ivan but as the series is already started I am not sure
to be able to contact him.
If I don't get an answer from him I'll let you know so that you can help
me in contacting him somewhere in Aussie.
