2013 Central US Speedway NewsSpeedway Long Track National Championship Information Mid America NewsMost of the tracks in the Midwest are finishing up their 2013 season, but Mid-America still has three races left before the weather gets cold. We are racing this Saturday, October 5th, the following Saturday (October 12th), and then our 5th Annual Halloween race will be held on October 26th.This is typically one of the best attended events of the year. Everybody attending the event is encouraged to dress up and get in the Halloween spirit. Not sure if you want to dress up this year?Just like last year, our group of celebrity judges will assign starting positions in the heats based on the quality of your costume. We do want to thank Kevin Leineweber for putting together the Decatur Discovery Academy Night at our last event. Kevin's efforts exposed a large group of people to flat track racing, and several have emailed to say what a great time they had, and that they would be back. It was one of the best attended Saturday night events that we have ever had. Plans are already under way to make next year's event even better. We received an order of Mid-America Hoodies just before the last event and they will be available at all of the remaining events. Note that riders meeting will be at 4:30, and practice is at 5:00pm for the remaining races. Mid-America Speedway (September 29, 2013) Mid America NewsThe last race at Mid-America was our Night before the Indy Mile event, and that was one of our most successful events ever. We were at the Springfield Mile on Saturday, the AMA Pro Racing announcers and Jay Springsteen even mentioned the Astro Cup event. Special thanks to Harley-Davidson of Bloomington, IN for once again sponsoring this event. The crew from Harley-Davidson of Indiana ended up having a successful weekend after winning the XR1200 class at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday with rider Jeremy McWilliams. This weekend September 7th, the green flag fly's again for our Heavy Vintage Night and just like last year, it will pay $100 per cylinder to win the class. Heavy Vintage is defined as air cooled motorcycles 1983 and older, 351cc and higher. The lights come on again the following Saturday, September 14th.Decatur Discovery Academy Night and Mid-America have partnered together for this event and created Discovering Dirt Flat Track Night. The idea was created by Kevin Leineweber who pilots the #72 machine in the Vintage Light class and is also a physics instructor at Decatur Discovery Academy. This is the perfect opportunity to come watch many of the best flat track riders in the Midwest while supporting a great cause. The National Anthem will be sung live by Taylor Sidwell from the Decatur Discovery Academy Community. This year things are being changed up slightly. This year it will be round 10 of the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Series. However, we are adding a few other classes to the night. The one that has received the most attention is the Bultaco Astro Challenge. The class is restricted to Bultaco Astro's only. Initially the thought was to get 18 riders committed to the event, and based on the response it was increased to 21 riders (3 heats of 7).It was at this point that we realized that there were a lot more Astro's out there than we estimated. The decision was quickly made that the 21 riders that originally committed would get spots in the night program, and anybody else that wanted to sign up could, but they would have to run their own set of heats to determine the seven riders that would make up a fourth heat, and go on to the night program. Some of the former Grand National winners that have signed up for the event are Jay Springsteen, David Aldana, Steve Morehead, Garth Brow, and Joe Kopp. Orial Puig who is the nephew of Senor Bulto who was the founder of Bultaco will be one of the honorary Grand Marshall's of the event and the honorary starter of the Astro Cup We are running the Open Shootout, along with the following modern bike classes: 80-200 youth, 250 Money, Speedway, and Open Quad. The Open Quad class was set up as an invitational, and all spots are now filled. Because this is an AMA event, AMA cards will be required. The AMA is offering one day memberships at a significant savings over an annual pass, and if you purchase an annual pass within 90 days of the purchasing a day membership, the cost of the day membership will be credited to an annual membership. Entry fees for this event will be $35 per class, pit passes $10 for age 10+, and $5 for age 5-9. Last weekend's event had 125 total entries, with 18 riders in the 450 (bike) class, and 21 in the Open Bike class. There were some great rides by several riders, and the end of the night, Rob Pearson won the Open Bike Class, and earning his first ever main event win at Mid-America, Barry Benkert *r., won the 450 Class. The biggest event of the year once again will be on August 16th, during our Fourth Annual Friday night before the Indy Mile during the MotoGP weekend. This will also be a round of the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Series, but will also include the 450 Shootout which features most of the top GNC riders in the country. We will also be adding some modern bike and youth bike classes. Because this is an AMA National, AMA cards will be required. Also new this year is the Bultaco Astro Cup. Initially we said that it was going to be limited to 18 entries, and there are currently almost twice that many riders that have requested spots. There are several retired GNC Experts signed up, but the two most famous have to be Jay Springsteen, and David Aldana. The attention that this event has generated has surprised our wildest expectations and will make it an event that you won't want to miss. We are close to having a schedule out, but we want to throw out a couple questions, and would appreciate feedback. The Midwest Motorcycle Club is wanting to know what the interest is in having a Saturday night and a Sunday event. They are also considering making a least one night a TT, but they need to know if the interest is there. Please drop us a note at info@midamspeedway.com and I will pass the responses on to them. The second question is would people attend a practice a week or two before Daytona Bike Week? We held one last year, and while it was pretty cold, everybody seemed to enjoy getting a chance to ride. We would be looking at scheduling two weekends before people have to leave for FL, which we could move to the weekend before in case the weather does not cooperate. Should we try to schedule another event this year? Is Saturday or Sunday preferred? Third, the folks at the Midwest Motorcycle Club will be holding their 29th annual Swap Meet at the Marion County Fairgrounds on Saturday, April 21st and Sunday, April 22nd.We are going to schedule a practice for Saturday, and use Sunday as a rain date. Anybody attending practice will be given free admission to the swap meet. Is there interest in us scheduling practice. The promoter of the Extreme International Ice Series (www.xiir.com) asked me to send a note out that they will be in Danville, IL on Friday, February 22, and Council Bluffs, IA on Saturday, April 6th.They have added a 450 Class, and a 125cc Pit bike Class. The last round in St. Charles, MO on January 23rd had 11 entries, and had a total purse of $1,000, with Rob Pearson taking most of the purse money home. The Pit bikes are limited to 150 studs which can be purchased at the arena.
