Gene started speedway in May of 1996 at IMI Motor Sports Complex in Denver, in Division Two. Mid season he moved to Division One and took fourth place in points in 1996. "In October, Jay "Do or Die" Gruetzmacher and I packed up my van and headed off to Lake Charles Louisiana to race. I made it to the main event, and took 5th out of 6!"

In February, Gene Petz suffered a bad crash during the final of the 1997 Colorado State Ice Championship, and required pins, plates and plaster to his right arm and a cast for a broken right ankle. His doctor says he should be ready to go again by the end of March.

"I was an average motocross racer when I was younger. I owe a lot to (Bouncing) Bob Richards who has taken the time to teach me to ride speedway. He is a great sportsman and a good friend, and has been there to help since the first time I cracked the throttle on a speedway bike."
