Charlie Venegas

Former National Champion Charlie "The Edge" Venegas topped the deepest Wednesday night field of the season by winning his fifth main event of the season at The Grand in Industry Hills.

Venegas was lined up in gate three, on the outside shoulder of Scott Brant who had won the past two main events at The Grand. Venegas jumped off the line when the tapes went up and was first to turn one. Former Junior National Champion Jimmy Fishback was also able to beat Brant to turn one and held second. Venegas pulled to a comfortable lead and didn't receive a challenge from Fishback who was trying to protect his position from the determined Brant. Venegas cruised to the checkered flag and the victory while Fishback remained composed to finish second ahead of Brant and Dario Galvin.

The first round of heats began with Skyler Greyson taking the win while Shawn McConnell suffered an engine failure behind him. Tim Gomez made an impressive First Division debut by defeating Ryan Fisher in his first heat. Venegas began his evening on the winning track ahead of Justin Boyle. Northern California's Bryan Yarrow won the next heat and Brant closed out the round by defeating Eddie Castro.

The second round began with Brant passing fast-starting Neil Facchini at the end of the first lap on his way to victory. Tommy Hedden defeated Nate Perkins in the next race. Fisher defeated Boyle to win race 19. Galvin scored an impressive win over Yarrow in race 20 and Fishback was awarded the victory over Venegas after the race was red flagged.

Shaun Harmatiuk began the final round with a win over Gomez. Venegas handed Brant his first loss of the evening in race 30. Fishback won his second straight race in event 31. Castro won the next race and Yarrow won for the second time in the final heat race.

Galvin was penalized for touching the tapes in the first semi and when Yarrow experienced bike problems in turn one it appeared that Brant and Boyle would cruise into the main. Boyle went down in turn two and was unable to remove himself from the track and the red flag was waved. The race win was awarded to Brant and second to Galvin.

The second semi had to be restarted twice after a turn one bunching incident and then a fall by Gomez. Venegas was able to win the third try with Fishback finishing second to take the other transfer to the main. Yarrow handily won the Consolation.

Michael Hernandez led the Second Division Main on the first lap but gave in to the pressure of Steve Murray and drifted wide in turn two of the second lap. It was the opening that Murray needed to capitalize on and he blasted into the lead. Murray pulled away for his fourth win of the season. Billy Braden passed Hernandez to finish second and Eloy Medellin was fourth.

Troy Robinson led all four laps to win the Third Division Main Event in his first night of speedway racing. Steve Dziadus, Sr. was second, Wayne Isaac finished third, Damon Barry was fourth, Mark Skeels finished fifth, and Miles Calvin was unable to start due to bike problems.

Krystal Cramer was victorious in the Youth Main with Austin Novratil finishing second and Russell Green in third. Kyle Hedden won the Pee Wee Main ahead of the biggest field of the season.

The Grand hosted its largest crowd in its brief history of speedway racing. Among those in attendance was speedway legend, and former World Champion, Barry Briggs. It was also the largest contingent of riders to compete at The Grand with over 70 racers competing.
