AMA Speedway National Championship Series Round 2 - Industry Racing, CA, USA - August 10, 2019
“Mad” Max Ruml overcame a horrendous start to his evening and won Round Two of the AMA Speedway National Championship Series at Industry Racing.
Defending National Champion Billy “The Kid” Janniro entered the Final with a perfect score and that afforded him the right to pick his starting position first. He took little time in selecting gate one. Ruml had the next choice and picked gate two. Austin Novratil then chose gate four which left Gino Manzares with gate three.
When the tapes went up it was Ruml who sprung into the lead. Janniro was not about to let his perfect evening slip away without a fight though. He chased after the leader through the first lap. His bid ended on the second lap, though, when he slid off in turn two. It was Novratil who was next to lead the charge after Ruml with Manzares behind him. Ruml was not to be denied and he was first to the checkered flag. Novratil held on to second, Manzares finished third, and Janniro was fourth.
Ruml’s victory moved him into second place in the overall standings behind Janniro. Manzares remains third in the standings and he’s just two points behind Ruml with Novratil, Colton Hicks, and Russell Green rounding out the top five.
Ruml’s evening got off to a terrible start when he touched the tapes in event one and was excluded. Former Junior 250 National Champion Colton Hicks beat Tim Gomez when the race got underway. Russell Green held off Bob Hicks to win event two. Janniro began his evening on a high note by beating Novratil in event three. Manzares ended round one with a win over Tommy Hedden.
Janniro began round two with a victory ahead of Gomez. Manzares won his second straight race by beating Colton Hicks. Max Ruml righted his ship with a win ahead of Bart Bast. Novratil passed “Fast” Eddie Castro on the second lap the end the second round with a victory.
The third round began with Danny Faria beating Samuel Ramirez. Colton Hicks trapped from the gate four in event 10 and kept Novratil at bay for his second win. Janniro beat Ruml, Bob Hicks, and Manzares for his third straight win. Hedden ended round three by beating Blake Borello.
Novratil started round four by beating Manzares. Colton Hicks scored his third victory by defeating his father, Bob, and his uncle, Hedden. Ruml won his second race by beating Samuel Ramirez. Janniro remained perfect with a win ahead of Faria to end the fourth round.
Janniro had a perfect 12 points entering the final round of heats. Colton Hicks had 11 points; Novratil’s tally was 10; Ruml and Manzares both had eight; Hedden had seven points; Bob Hicks and Danny Faria each had six points. Blake Borello and Bart Bast still had hopes of a semi-final place with five points apiece.
Bob Hicks solidified his place in the semis with a victory to open the final round. Janniro completed the heats with a perfect 15 points while Colton Hicks’s second gave him 13 points and first gate choice in the second semi. Ruml beat Novratil, Hedden, and Faria in the penultimate heat but all four competitors would still make the semis. Manzares beat Jason Ramirez in the last heat.
Janniro stormed to his sixth victory in six races in the first semi to enter the Final perfect and Manzares finished second to join the nine-time National Champion. Ruml and Novratil finished one-two in the second semi and both transferred to the Final.
Despite the result of the Final, Janniro’s 18 points were the most of the evening. He also sits atop the overall Series standings and has a large 10-point lead as the Series heads to Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway in Auburn, California for the Grand Finale next month.
