1999 Week Five
June 11, 1999 Lawrenceburg Motorcycle Speedway

A strong thunderstorm moved through the area just after completion of the
first set of heats. The storm abated approximately 45 minutes later, but
left water standing in several places on the circuit. Track prep expert
Herschel Benkert was immediately out on the surface working his magic
following the rain. In an amazing display of tireless energy, Benkert had the
track in excellent shape and race ready about two hours later. Unfortunately,
time caught up with the promoters as the track's curfew neared. This brought
an end to the nights SPEEDWAY action with no one more disappointed than
Benkert himself.
Action in the one SPEEDWAY heat that did take place was indeed very
interesting: Long time pro-am flat tracker and SPEEDWAY racer Mike Butler
made his return to the sport after a long absence. Patrick Reynolds got the
gate and lead going into the first turn when his bike suddenly loaded up from
carburetion problems causing him to straighten up. The likable Butler took
advantage of the problem to take the lead. Reynolds got the bike cleared out
and set his sights on Butler who was now a straight away ahead. A lap and
one half later the gap was closed with the two riders now battling for the
lead. Reynolds was able to get under the race savvy Butler who quickly adapted
the new leaders line and followed him to the checkers.
