HUNTINGTON BEACH — – An international motorcycle racing legend from Huntington Beach nicknamed “Jellyman” and “The Wizard of Balance” died on Easter Sunday morning.
Kelly Moran, a two-time U.S. National Champion in the 1980s, died in Huntington Beach from complications with emphysema.
Friends described Moran, 49, as a gentleman, an easygoing rider who thrived under pressure, and someone with a gift for making others feel special. Moran was also a talented rider and entertainer, friend said.
“He was absolutely magical on a motorcycle,” said world champion and fellow rider Bruce Penhall.
Moran was known for speedway racing, often hanging off the bike while sliding through the turns. Moran would also lay his bike down on race track to avoid other riders that crashed and then use the throttle control and his balance to coax the bike back up without losing his place in the race.
These techniques where a testament to Moran’s agility and skill, and they earned him his nicknames.
Moran became a U.S. National Champion in 1983 and 1984 and was a key team member on the U.S. squads that won the World Team Cup in 1982 and 1990. Penhall was the captain of the U.S. squads. He said Moran was invaluable to the team.
“Our team was strong because of guys like Kelly,” said Penhall. “He was short in stature but one of the biggest-hearted kids you’ll ever meet.”
Kelly qualified for three World Speedway Championships overseas and finished fourth in all three. Moran raced on motorcycle teams including Hull Vikings, Birmingham Brummies, Eastbourne Eagles, Sheffield Tigers, Belle Vue Aces and Swindon Robins.
Friend Mike Donaldson said Moran would often give away his trophies, helmet and riding gloves to his fans.
“That was the kind of person he was,” Donaldson said. “He gave back to his fans. … He always treated the fans as number one.”
A Facebook fan site for Moran was posted in January of this year and has about 2,400 members. The day after his death there were several pages of comments.
Guy Keeley wrote: “Goodbye Kelly — we had as much fun watching you, as you obviously did riding. Thanks for the memories.”
Another fan, Steve Williams, wrote: “R.I.P. JELLYMAN… Kelly was a great speedway rider, who always had time for the fans and above all was a great entertainer, indeed one of the best of his era… and as all these tributes show, he will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of enjoying the racing he gave us over the years.”
