My name is Jonas Holmqvist and live in Eskilstuna in Sweden. I'm 26 years old
and originally come from Visby on the island of Gotland,
the home of Bysarna Speedway. I became interested in speedway when my
father took my to meetings in Visby when I was only two or three years
old and speedway has remained my main interest ever since. I do not
really have a favourite team, I'm more of a general speedway supporter. If I
have to mention some favourite teams, I would say
Bysarna, Mildenhall Fen Tigers and Wlokniarz Czestochowa. I usually
watch around 50 meetings every season and I'm also a big fan of
ice racing. I'm planning to go to St. Petersburg in Russia for the first
Ice racing. Grand Prix in January, if the meeting's not moved to Saransk!
Apart from watching speedway a couple of times a week, I am also
writing about Swedish Speedway in the Speedway Star.
The latest news on the speedway front in Sweden is that local rivals
Smederna and Eskilstuna have joined forces and will compete under the
name of Eskilstuna/Smederna in 1997. Cash-starved Dackarna have signed a
major sponsorship deal and will be known as Team Svelux Målilla from
now on. The sponsorship deal gives the club £50 000 over two seasons,
which has given the club opportunity to sign Indianerna's Stefan
Andersson.

The Swedish speedway season is now over, but there is a lot of actively on the
transfer market. All transfers involving Swedish riders must be completed
before November 1, two weeks earlier than
usual. Eskilstuna/Smederna (the local rivals have merged) have lost
their star Peter Nahlin to Elite League newcomers Vargarna. Vargarna
have also signed former Örnarna rider Niklas Karlsson (unattached in
1996) and Team Viking number one Stefan Larsson. Former star Thomas
Karlsson is planning a come-back, so the Norrköping outfit looks
pretty strong. They are also hoping that Chris Manchester or Jason
Crump will join the club. Manchester has never ridden in the Swedish
League. Crump rode for Rospiggarna in 1995 plus a few matches for
Getingarna in 1994. The last date for signing foreign riders is April
15. Indianerna have lost Stefan Andersson, who has joined his old club
Dackarna (now known as Team Svelux Malilla). Indianerna have also lost
Henrik Tolkstam to Valsarna, but are currently having talks with
Smederna's Magnus Zetterström. Bysarna have signed Rospiggarna duo
Patrik Dybeck and Tomas Messing plus Norwegian prospect Trygve Jensen.
The Gotland team are also hoping that Kenneth Lindby and Dennis Löfqvist will
be making come-backs. Örnarna have signed new contracts with all their Elite
League riders, though Henrik Fredell and Björn-Ivar Fauske leave for Korparna.
Vetlanda have lost Mikael Olsson
to Nässjö. Nässjö need new riders as Mikael A. Anders son and Jimmy
Zetterberg have decided to retire. Västervik are also looking for new
riders, but have so far only signed Martin Svensson, who returns after
one season with Vargarna. Piraterna, the only club without a foreign
rider in 1996, have signed Norwegian Bernt Larsen and will perhaps
take his Oslo team-mate Stig Bjerke as second foreigner.
Subject: The stars of next century
Date: Mon, 21 Oct 1996
Who will be the stars of the 21st century? Britain seem to have a lot of
promising teenagers in the Conference League and a few of them will
certainly be world class riders in a couple of years. The Czech Republic and
especially Poland seem to have many talented juniors.
Personally I think that Poland will be a very strong speedway nation
in five years time. They have Piotr Protasiewicz, Rafal Dobrucki, Tomasz
Bajerksi, Sebastian Ulamek and a whole string of others. I watch a lot of
Polish speedway on satellite television, so I have seen
these guys many times. I think the main problem in Poland is that most
tracks are very similar. Big, wide tracks that don't require a lot of
skill. I can't understand why the Poles don't change their tracks.
That would not only make the riders better, the racing will be a lot
better as well.
Sweden and Denmark have a couple of promising juniors, but none of these
countries seem to have as many bright prospects as a few years
ago. Sweden do at least have one mega talent, Andreas Jonsson of Rospiggarna.
Jonsson, who celebrated his 16th birthday at the end of the season, averaged
nearly six points in the Swedish Elite
League, which perhaps is the hardest league in the world. He was
crowned Swedish 80cc champion in 1995 and this year was his first in the 500cc
class. I can's see anyone challenging him as the best 16-year-old rider in the
world. Paul Lee appears to be a very talented
rider, but how many points would he score in the Premier League. Just
look at David Mason, who scores maximum after maximum in the Conference League,
but hardly score at all in the Premier League.
Andreas Jonsson has already beaten a couple of Grand Prix riders in the Swedish
Elite League and is definitely the best Swedish prospect since Per Jonsson made
his debut.
What about the future of American speedway. The United States have been a world
force for the last 15 years or so, but sadly I can't see
that continue for very much longer. The Californian scene is dominated
by oldies and most tracks seem to have closed down. When the current
US stars have retired, I think USA will become a second-class speedway
nation. Perhaps they will have one or two top riders (Chris Manchester?), but I
can hardly see them winning test matches against
other major countries.
Subject: RE: Swedish Elite League

Here are the answers on your questions about the Elite League:
1) There are two reserves (number 6 and 7).
2) The reserves have to be the riders with the lowest averages, though
periodical averages are used. A period consists of four matches.
The riders with the lowest averages in period one, will be reserves
in period two.
3) The heat leaders do not have to be programmed at particular numbers.
They can wear any race-jacket from 1 to 5.
4) A reserve can take a maximum of six rides. (The other riders can
take up to seven rides if they are used as tactical substitutes
and their team operates rider replacement.
5) A reserve can only replace a rider excluded for tape-touching, not
a rider excluded under the two-minute rule.
6) Riders do not have to take a minimum number of rides.
7) Tactical subs are allowed form heat 5 to heat 14 if the team is six
points behind or more.
8) A rider have to be injured or ill to use rider replacement for him.
It is not allowed to operate rider replacement for a rider, who is
racing elsewhere.
9) Bonus points are counted when calculating the riders for the top
scorers' heat.
10) There is a maximum team points limit, but honestly I can't
remember the exact figure. The points limit has been changed a
couple of times. I will check it and tell you later. In the
Swedish League, it is however always possible to keep the same
team for another season, even if the their total average is over
the points limit.

A list of Swedish track records will follow.
Subject: Points limit in Sweden
Date: Thu, 24 Oct 1996
The points limit in the Swedish Elite League is currently 42 points.
Bonus points are not included when calculating team averages. As I said
before, the Swedish points limit system is a bit different from the one used in
England. If a club ends the season with a team average of
for instance 45 points, they are allowed to keep that team for another
season, but can't sign any new riders. So if a club with a team average of 45
points loses a rider with an eight-point average, he can
only be replaced by a rider with an average of five points or less.
If a rider moves up from the First Division to the Elite League, his
average is reduced by 45%.
I think this is a quite good system, which I would like to see Britain
adopt. Teams don't have to be split up, which is very often the case in
Britain.
Subject: Short Swedish News

Magnus Zetterström has signed for Eskilstuna/Smederna. He had talks
with other clubs, but finally decided to remain in his home town.
Indianerna have signed Robert Eriksson from Valsarna. Eriksson started
his career in the Kumla club.
The 1997 Swedish Championships (Senior, Under 21 and 80cc) will be
held at Vetlanda. The 1998 Swedish Championship weekend will take
place at Hagfors.

Eskilstuna's hot prospect Kenny Olsson is not going to ride for new
team Eskilstuna/Smederna. On Friday, Olsson signed for Vastervik, the
club for which his father Borje rode for in the late 60's.
Robert Eriksson of Valsarna has returned to his old club Indianerna.
Friday, November 1 is the last date for transfers.
Magnus Zetterstrom has signed for Eskilstuna/Smederna. They have also
secured the services of 500cc newcomer Jimmy Jansson. Jansson who rode
80cc speedway for Getingarna in 1996, is son of former rider Bo Jansson.
Jimmy's uncle was the late Wimbledon hero Tommy Jansson and
Jimmy's grandfather is former World finalist Joel Jansson.
Team Viking Speedway (Orebro) might be forced to close down. The club
has had a tough season financially and it's doubtful if there will be
any speedway at all at Örebro in 1997. The club was relegated to Division Two,
but might still be allowed back in Division One. A decision will be taken next
week. They have however signed one new rider, Smederna junior Tommy Pihl.

Tony Rickardsson is holding seven track records in Sweden. The fastest track in
this country is Kumla and the slowest one is Gullspång.
Despite the fact that a lot of foreigners are racing in the Swedish Elite
League, Lars Gunnestad is the only foreigner to hold a track record on an Elite
League circuit. Another notable fact is that Peter
Karlsson does not hold a single track record.

The 1997 Swedish First Division will consist of 11 or possibly 12 clubs divided
into a northern and a southern section. Like this year, the top clubs will
contest a Play Off League after the summer break. The bottom clubs will form a
new First Division, starting in
August. Filbyterna and Team Viking have been allowed to stay in the First
Division and surprisingly two Third Division clubs have also been accepted as
members of the 1997 First Division. Those are Lejonen (the Lions) from Gislaved
and Gnistorna (the Sparks) from Malmö. If there is going to be a 12th member of
this division, that will be Gävle, winners of the Second Division this season.
This means that the higher divisions in 1997 will look like this:
ELITE LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION(NORTH) FIRST DIVISION(SOUTH)
ORNARNA(Mariestad) MASARNA(Avesta) KAPARNA(Gothenburg)
ROSPIGGARNA(Hallstavik) GETINGARNA(Stockholm) KARLSTAD
INDIANERNA(Kumla) PIRATERNA(Motala) NASSJO
VALSARNA(Hagfors) FILBYTERNA(Linköping) KORPARNA(Uddevalla)
VETLANDA TEAM VIKING(Örebro) LEJONEN(Gislaved)
ESKILSTUNA/SMEDERNA GÄVLE ??? GNISTORNA(Malmö)
VÄSTERVIK
BYSARNA(Visby)
TEAM SVELUX MÅLILLA
VARGARNA(Norrköping)
The merger between Smederna and Eskilstuna is obviously not going to give
Smederna as many new riders as hoped. The latest Eskilstuna rider to sign for
another club is Mathias Strömberg, who has joined Karlstad.

Motala team Piraterna have pulled out of the 1997 Swedish First Division. The
club could only present seven riders of First Division standard. SVEMO has
stated that First Division teams must have a squad of at least ten riders.
Piraterna are now set to compete in a lower division. The result of this is
that yet some more riders leave the club. Fredrik Johansson and Niklas
Andersson move to Linköping team
Filbyterna and Per Jansson has signed for Stockholm team Getingarna.
Magnus Woss will probably retire and then there's not much left. Veteran Börje
Ring has not decided what to do, but perhaps he will retire as well. In any
case, the club will continue to stage open meetings and 80cc racing.

Swedish Elite League newcomers Vargarna have signed Jason Crump as their new
foreigner. Crump did not ride in Sweden in 1996, but was a member of
Rospiggarna team when they won the league in 1995. He also had a few matches
with Getingarna in 1994. Crump will fly out to Sweden on Monday mornings and
will act as a junior trainer on Monday nights. He will then race for Vargarna
on Tuesday nights before heading back to Britain on Wednesday mornings. Crump
is reported to cost the club £25000 per season, which despite the travel costs,
is less than a Swedish top rider costs.

Niklas Karlsson is allowed to join Vargarna for free. The Elite League newcomers
do not have to pay Ornarna a transfer fee. That was decided at the speedway
clubs meeting at Hagfors over the weekend. Other news is that Elite League
reserves will be allowed to double up by riding for a First Division team as
well. The points limit will stay at 42 points (excluding bonus), but a minimum
limit will also be introduced. That will be set at 38 points. All foreign
riders in the Swedish League system will have to take part in a minimum of 80
per cent of the matches.
The Swedish fixture list is also more or less completed. Below is a list of
some of the more important meetings. I will send a more complete list later.
