Sideways Saturdays Speedway
Cal Expo - Sacramento, CA
Saturday June 16, 2001

A really nice evening at Cal Expo. Most of the track was good, the racing was good and most things
went according to plan. We are really beginning to see a dominance by the youngsters with Brian Yarrow
and Eric Carrillo winning the main events.

I got to talk with all three of the casualties from the previous week. Harlan Bast Jnr. has a broken elbow,
Greg Hooten has a broken collar bone, bones broken in his hand and concussion and Scott McNeil has broken ribs.
None blame the state of the track last week and all look forward to getting back and racing at Cal Expo as soon
as possible.

Scratch Main
1 Bryan Yarrow
2 Tommy Hedden
3 Bart Bast
4 Eric Carrillo
Bryan Yarrow stormed out of the gate and nobody could touch him. Last week’s winner, Bart Bast,
starting from the outside position, lost the race between the gate and the first corner on this very small track.

Scratch Consi
1 Paul Orlandi
2 Glenn Moore
3 Scott Olney
4 Ivan Sevart
Ivan Sevart was in a secure second place until falling on the last lap.

Handicap Main
1 Eric Carrillo (10 yard handicap)
2 Chris Kerr (0)
3 Tommy Hedden (30)
4 Bart Bast (50)
5 Billy Hiles (0)
6 Tom Adams (0)
Eric Carrillo got past Tom Adams, Billy Hiles and Chris Kerr and was gone. Hedden and Bast got around two of
the zero yarders, but their progress stopped with Chris Kerr.

Handicap Consi
1 Bryan Yarrow
2 Ivan Sevart
3 Rick Shafer
4 Jon Curry
5 Scott Olney
6 Paul Orlandi

Division 2 Main
1 JJ Martynse
2 Craig Boone
3 Shawn Eldridge
Personally I thought Craig Boone had won this race. Mike Browne fell down just after the starting line on
the penultimate lap and some time later the red flag came out. JJ got past Craig on the last lap. JJ is
another recently promoted Junior Speedway rider, showing great form on a 500.

Division 2 Consi
1 Harlan Bast Snr.
2 Devin DeFreece
3 Ron Woodsford
4 Matt Browne
What a ferocious race! Devin DeFreece lead for most of the race with Matt Browne and Ron Woodsford battling
for second place. Matt got pushed into the wall by the starting tapes so hard, I still don’t understand how
he managed to stay on, Ron went wide, letting Harlan through, then just as everything settled down on the last
corner Harlan Bast came through on the inside, stealing the win from Devin.

Division 3 Main
1 Richard Gutske
2 David Baker
3 Dean Blankenbiller
4 Lee Sharp
On only his fourth night of racing Richard Gutske took the third division main.

Division 3 Consi
1 Jason Botsford
2 Brenton Bast
3 Bruce Baker
4 Brian Leventon

Juniors Division 1
Greg Hooten
Mark Carrillo
TJ Fowler
JT Mabry
Danny Easley

Juniors Division 2
Pete King
Jay Ricketts
Amanda English
Bruce Bast
Juniors Division 3
Ricky Felicio
Ronny Woodsford
Tori Hubbert

The promoters sent out a letter of apology for the previous week and even in the program wrote a note thanking
anyone who came the previous week for coming back. Everyone who rides at Cal Expo, and the fans who support
Sideways Saturdays think we are privileged to have 2 tracks in Northern California. Most tracks close because
they don’t have a product to show, so the crowd dwindles. This week proved that we have a great product, its just
a question of getting the word out to fill all those empty seats in the stands.
