Jack Milne Cup
May 14, 2005 - Costa Mesa
By: Ryan Evans

Mike Faria

Mike Faria took home the Jack Milne Cup for the second consecutive year on Saturday night at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Faria started from gate two and jumped ahead of the previously unbeaten Chris Manchester who had started in gate one. Faria went directly to the inside line and fought and held back Manchester the entire way and was first to the checkered flag. Manchester had to settle for second, Ryan Fisher was third, Bryan Yarrow finished fourth, and Bobby Schwartz was fifth.

The first of three rounds began with Schwartz using the outside line to get around McConnell for the win. Manchester ran away from everyone to win the second race. Chris Kerr went around the outside of Faria on the opening lap and held on to win race three. Fisher was an easy winner in the final race of the opening round.

Fisher opened round two by defeating Schwartz. Manchester made it two for two by beating Eddie Castro in the next race. Faria scored his first victory of the evening ahead of Randy DiFrancesco. Kerr won his second race to finish the second round.

Manchester began the final round by with his third straight win. Fisher kept pace with Manchester by getting his third victory in race 20. Faria remained one point back of Manchester and Fisher by winning his second race over Tommy Hedden. Kerr closed out the heats with his third consecutive win to remain perfect.

The first semi featured a beautiful inside-outside battle between Manchester and Fisher which saw them trade the lead several times with Manchester getting a narrow victory. Faria and Yarrow were first and second, respectively, in the second semi, while the previously unbeaten Kerr finished third. Schwartz trapped from the outside in the Last Chance and went on to victory and earned the final transfer to the main.

In the Support Main several riders went into the tapes, but none with as much flair as Dale Facchini, who went completely through the tapes before his bike launched from underneath him. After tumbling for ten feet it ended up resting on the right peg! Steve Murray was penalized for being the first into the tapes. Dale Facchini jumped into the lead on the restart ahead of his brother, Neil. Neil stalked his younger brother the entire race, but Dale withstood the pressure for his first victory of the year. Murray finished third, Billy Lyons was fourth, and Troy McConnell finished fifth.

The Support B Main Event required three attempts and it was Steve Dziadus, Sr. who persevered to take home the trophy for the second straight week. Mark Sincavage was second, Dan Wensloff finished third, Mark Skeels was fourth, Michael Novratil finished fifth, and Keith Mullally was sixth.

The Jack Milne Cup is held to honor the legendary 1937 World Speedway Champion. In addition to his stellar career as one of speedway's pioneers, Milne was very influential to original Costa Mesa promoter Harry Oxley and his family, who currently promote the track. Milne was a fixture at the legendary track prior to his death several years ago.
