Stanley Exhaust Tech Night
June 27, 2009 - Costa Mesa
By: Ryan Evans

Former National Champion “Flyin” Mike Faria captured the main event to complete a perfect night on Stanley’s Exhaust Tech Night at the world famous Costa Mesa Speedway.

Faria’s perfect score earned him the right to first pick of starting position and he chose gate one. The first time the riders came to the tapes Bobby “Boogaloo” Schwartz got into the tapes and was penalized. When the tapes finally went up Faria made his gate choice pay off by leading the field into turn one. Shawn “Mad Dog” McConnell, who started in gate two, tried to cut back underneath the leader coming out of turn two but Faria guarded the low line and prevented the lead change. McConnell was under attack from Jimmy “Little Animal” Fishback and Faria took advantage of McConnell’s switch in focus. Faria was never threatened again and led all the way to the checkered flag. McConnell held on to second, Fishback was third, Schwartz finished fourth, and “Nasty” Nate Perkins was fifth.

“Battling” Buck Blair opened the heats with a victory over John Marquez. McConnell beat Tim Gomez for his first win. Faria passed Dukie Ermolenko on the second lap of event three for his first win. Schwartz passed Fishback at the end of lap two for the victory in the final heat of round one.

Perkins began round two with a win over Fishback. McConnell made it two wins in a row by beating Blair. Faria defeated Eddie Castro for his second straight win. Gomez scored an impressive win over Schwartz and Ermolenko to conclude the second round.

The final round started with Perkins getting his second straight win ahead of Doug Greyson. Gomez beat McConnell for his second straight win. Faria remained perfect after defeating Blair. Castro closed out the heats with a win over Schwartz.

Gomez led the first semi under heavy pressure from McConnell for three laps. Unbeknownst to Gomez, his rear tire was going flat and as he entered the final corner his deflating tire, and McConnell, forced him off the inside. McConnell also went wide and Fishback took the win with McConnell beating Gomez for second. Faria and Schwartz ran one-two in the second semi to book their places in the main event. Perkins won the Last Chance to take the final spot in the main event field.

Gino Manzares led all four laps en route to victory in the Support Main Event. Rudy Laurer finished second, Josh Abbott was third, Rick Farron finished fourth, and Frank Pecce was fifth.

Butch Waymire dominated the field and captured the Support B Main Event victory. Charlie Ousley finished second, Jonni Jade was third, and Paul Thornton finished fourth.

The evening was marred by a crash in one of the Support heats. Billy Braden suffered a broken ankle and a major laceration on his backside. He was transported to the hospital where he had the laceration repaired and he will have surgery on his ankle later in the week.

Costa Mesa Speedway will not be hosting any events the next four Saturdays due to the Independence Day Holiday and the Orange County Fair. Speedway racing returns Saturday, August 1 with the prestigious Fair Derby.
