Big Kids Gumball Rally
February 22, 2020 - Industry Racing
By Ryan Evans

National Champion Billy “The Kid” Janniro and Tyler Warren both collected main event victories at the Big Kids Gumball Rally at Industry Racing.

The luck of the draw determined the starting positions for the Scratch Main Event. Janniro drew gate one, “Mad” Max Ruml was gate two, Gino Manzares was in gate three, and Broc Nicol drew gate four.

The start was close and the four racers entered turn one in tight formation. It’s not unusual for a close start like this to lead to problems and this case confirmed that thought. Janniro’s back wheel caught Ruml’s front wheel with the latter going down. The race continued with a frustrated Ruml picking himself up off the ground. Janniro held the lead as the three remaining racers exited turn two. The leader was hotly pursued by Manzares and Nicol, but the 10-time AMA National Champion was unfazed by any attack that they could muster. Janniro was first to the checkered flag, Manzares was second, Nicol finished third, and Ruml was fourth.

The lineup for the Handicap Main Event had Warren and “Gentleman” Jake Isaac on the 20 yard line with the quartet of all four Scratch Main participants behind them on the 50 yard line—Janniro, Manzares, Nicol, and Ruml. Warren beat Isaac into turn one to grab the lead. Janniro led the charge from the back row and quickly found himself in second place. He closed the gap on Warren and was planted on his back tire. Janniro stalked the leader the rest of the way but Warren showed incredible composure to keep him at bay. Despite the immense pressure, Warren held on to take the victory. Janniro settled for second, Isaac finished third, Manzares was fourth, Ruml finished fifth, and Nicol was sixth.

Recently graduated youth speedway racer Landon Norton’s debut on a 500cc machine couldn’t have gone better. He won his heat, his semi, and completed his perfect night by leading all four laps of the Second Division Main Event. Timmy Dion, also making his debut, finished second, Will McCloskey was third, and Lawrence McNutt finished fourth.

Second-generation racer David Perry was successful in his debut at Industry Racing by winning the Third Division Main Event. Rees Todd was second, Andy Dix finished third, Tyler Moszer was fourth, Dennis Osmer finished fifth, and Jake Myers was sixth.

National Champions Joe Jones and Josh Flammia got their 2020 off to a great start by winning the Sidecar Main Event. Ace Kale and Brent Smith were second, Kevin Kale and Tracy Gallagher finished third, and Dillon Osborne and Jamie Morabito were fourth.

The Big Kids Gumball Rally is traditionally held on the eve of the world famous Gumball Rally. The professional racers sacrifice their purse so that it can go to the youth competitors the next day. It typically has a large turnout of racers and this year was no different. The event is a way for them to give back to the sport that they love so much and to help with its future. There were 21 former youth racers competing on the program.
