TEAM USA'S BECKER AND NICOL WIN BIG AT PERRIS OPENER

After several uncertain months Perris Speedway opened it's 2016/17 Winter Season with a bang with Luke Becker and Broc Nicol winning the Main Events on 19 November 2016.

The track was saved by closure due to noise restrictions thanks to rider Rick Richards and Baghouse Inc, coming up with an inexpensive muffler insert that cuts around 5dB off of on track noises. The riders gave a thumbs up to the insert, which does not affect performance but noticeably quietens the bikes.

The days race format used the traditional American Handicap and Scratch racing program. 9 riders contested Handicap racing, with two heats per riders and the top 6 in points making the Main Event. Dillon Ruml charged through the field the win the opening heat of the season from 50 yards, Gino Manzares, also off of 50, came second with Russell Green third from 40. Heat two saw the expected charge from Luke Becker, winning also from the 50. Gage Geist on 40 was second place with Broc Nicol (50) third. Round two saw Green win the first event from Manzares and Nicol. Becker failed the two minutes in heat 4, Geist taking the win from Ruml, with UK visitor Mike Neale (30) in third.

The Main Event featured two riders on 40 yards and four off of 50. It was Broc Nicol who was first through the traffic to claim victory. Ruml came in second place with Manzares third. The race was very hotly contested with six evenly matched competitors wisely choosing their lines as the bikes were often two or three wide.

Scratch Racing saw 16 riders partake. Manzares won heat 1 from Richards. Becker led home Green in heat 2, Ruml headed Geist in a very close heat 3 battle, with Nicol winning heat 4 from Neale and Justin Boyle. Semi final 1 saw Manzares winning and looking very fast, Geist made a fantastic start and took a brilliant second. Nicol made a superb attempt around turn 2 of lap 1 around the outside but he did not quite make the pass to the top two. Semi two saw Becker lead home Ruml from the impressive Richards, who held second until the final lap when Ruml edged by. Nicol won the B Main over Richards and Green.

The Main event was the epic expected. Dillon Ruml made the gate and looked set for the win, once more showing his rapid big track improvement. Becker was having none of it though and he made an inside drive on turn 3 of lap 2 to take the lead and eventual victory. Manzares claimed third place.

Division Two featured 9 riders, each having two heats (Round 2 Handicapped Olympique style). Heats went to Brad Moreau, Rudy Laurer, Hayley Perrault and Rohn Zellner. The winners topped the points chart to make the Main and were joined by Steve Bowen who won the Last Chance. Zellner made the fastest start but he was passed by Perrault who made a superb outside to inside cutback to displace her rival on the way to victory.

Division Three had Steve Brown winning heat 1 with Tom Bryant taking the Olympique style heat 2 and then the Main. 150 Mini Class saw Gavin Geist win all races, the two heats with ease though the Main saw a close battle with Luke Whitcomb. Levi Leutz won all Three Pee Wee Races. Chris Mistretta was the only Vintage rider and he was awarded first place.

The Sidecars put on their expected fantastic show. Jeff Rowe and Josh Bennett won all three races in a great display from Bryan Motis and new passenger Ricky Smith, three wins but three close races with the #2 team.

The six event Perris season continues on December 10th with Round 1 of the Team racing series. The event will also feature the annual Speedway Christmas party and charity toy drive.
