What a great night of racing it was at the Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway in Auburn Ca. and in front of a stadium packed with racing fans. Seven Extreme Sidecar teams made the trip to Auburn for the third round in the sidecar series at Fast Fridays this season. The teams included Joe Jones and Johnny Glover, Lawrence McNutt and Dana Miller, Robert and Laurie Curry, Jason Fritze and Adrianne Varela, Wade Boyd and Eric Lindauer and Smylie Kinne and Chuck Heider. Rounding out the teams and proving they can do more than ride speedway bikes Billy Janniro and Bart Bast were the seventh team, both without much experience on a sidecar each only racing sidecars once, Janniro three years ago and Bast over thirty years ago.
The sidecars ran a program that included six heat races with the teams each scoring points for finishing position. The three top scoring teams then transferred into the main event with the final fourth spot determined by a last chance race with the winner of that race filling the last spot. After the heats Jones/Glover led with nine points, the Curry team was second with eight and there was a tie for third between the Kinne/Heider team and the Boyd/Lindauer teams. Since Boyd/Lindauer beat Kinne/Heider when they met in the heats the third spot went to Boyd/Lindauer.
The other four teams met in the Last Chance Qualifier for a chance to advance to the final main event which the Kinne/Heider team secured with a win and took the fourth spot. The final was wild with a crash and three of the teams hooking up and spilling into the infield. Referee Steve Lucero called for a restart and the teams again lined up at the start line. As the tapes went up it was off to the races for Jones and Glover but the Boyd/Lindauer team did not let them just walk away easily as they got close with a little rubbing here and there through the laps in a fantastic final. Jones and Glover did persevere picking up the win, Boyd/Lindauer was second, Curry/Curry was third and Kinne/Heider was fourth. Great crowd-pleasing racing by all the sidecar teams.
Bryan Yarrow came out on top in the scratch main event as the fastest man of the night. Yarrow, who a few years back was a familiar name and very popular rider at Fast Fridays, took the event after two second place finishes in the heat and semi-final races to find a spot in the final. From the outside lane four Yarrow took control and really never looked back. Yarrow out distanced second place finisher Blake Borello, third place finisher Tyler Warren and Billy Janniro who finished fourth. Seeming to not lose a step, the last time Yarrow race on a speedway bike at Fast Friday's was last year in June for the North vs. South Challenge. Hoping maybe Yarrow will not be a stranger at Auburn's tricky dirt oval.
Rees Todd, the Capri-Sun kid, wrapped up the handicap main event riding off the 20-yard line. Todd was third in his heat race, first in his semi-final and then had the win in the main. The win was the second time Todd won the handicap program this season winning also on June 8. Timmy Dion was second and brother Rheten Todd was third.
Lawrence McNutt won the Division II main event. Doing double duty also driving a sidecar McNutt had a busy night with the win. Shawn Eldredge back from injury was second and John Peters was third. Everett Holmes getting used to the top spot on the winner’s podium picked up his third Division III main event of the season. Mike Newnham was second and Sam Richardson was third.
The Youth 150 division was again divided into a; A and B division because of the number of Youth 150 riders. Leeann Emerson won the A division followed by Jayce Preuss and Riley Rearick. Matthew Wright won the B division ahead of Jameson Hutchinson and Wesley Rearick. Charlie Trana again topped the Youth 250 division, making his seventh trip to the top of the winner’s podium this season in that division.
Next week is sure not to miss the grueling 25 lap main event at Fast Friday's.
