Hello, Goodbye – Thunderbowl Racing 9/7/22
Seems like it was just yesterday when Speedway returned to the Grand Arena in the City of Industry. Forced to close for two years because of Coronavirus and government overreach it was a challenge getting the old girl back up and functional.
The racetrack was gone. Sure all the parts were there, or somewhere. Get dirt and DG. Lay it out, build the wall, massage the gate and electronics. Then there’s the paperwork. Fee’s licenses, insurance only scratches the surface of what is required.
Paying the bills requires sponsors but they were faced with the same closures so commitments were a challenge. Sure they love Speedway and want to be here but they like us had a million dragons of their own to slay.
After two years of staying home with their digital devices even getting the fans back was a struggle.
Let’s talk money. Everything and I do mean everything is terribly expensive. Dam even dirt costs.
Luckily Industry had a Superman named Inman. He’s seasoned, knows the drill and players and doesn’t know what “No-Way” means.
Kelly Inman also knows how to put a team together. People like him who love the sport and measure their worth by what they accomplish rather than a paycheck. They are the secret sauce as every promoter needs and cherishes their hard work and commitment.
Of course the Industry Hills Expo Center staff needs a shout out. This is their playground and Speedway is fortunate to have them. Thank you Cory, Misty, Madelyn and Rosa.
So what’s in store for 2023? Will we be back, well yes indeed. Wednesdays? Yea mostly. Of course we want to run more events on Saturday’s and plan to whenever a date becomes available but it’s difficult. First the rent costs more. Second those that run Saturday/weekend events here every year never give them up. Third our sister track Costa Mesa runs on Saturday as on occasion does Steve Evans and Dave Joiner. Fourth Industry would have to charge spectators more. Industry did not raise its admission price in 2022 as we know you, like us are struggling in this time of runaway inflation.
Luckily we have some excellent sponsors who are willing to step up and help. Bruce Penhall would really like to see the Connor Penhall Memorial Cup run on a Saturday. And of course the National Series and California State require it. Serval other yet unnamed events would also be on the agenda if they could be run on Saturday.
It goes without saying that the most important thing needed to keep Speedway here at Industry is you the spectator. It is you that have keep the lights on. It is you that have given us the courage and energy to keep going. Thank you all, we are blessed by your participation.
This 2022 season Industry ran 11 race dates. We plan, hope and pray that we can expand that number. Stay tuned cause you’ll know as soon as we do.
As always scoring from 9/7/22 is provided by RC Jones and Speedwaybikes .com Look them up cause they cover every American Speedway track and rider.
