Team Racing - Season Final
November 2, 2008 - Perris Raceway
By: Ryan Evans

Under 21 National Champion Ricky “Kiwi Kid” Wells led the Perris Eagles to victory and also won the Scratch Main Event as Perris Raceway concluded its 2008 season.

The four-team clash featured the Eagles, Industry Hills Heathens, Victorville Vikings, and Ridgecrest Aces. This event was round one with the second, and final, round being contested in Victorville.

The Eagles blitzed the team competition right away by opening the day with four straight victories. Wells, Joey Holt, Greg Ayers, and Bubba Vazzana did the honors. Jason Ramirez broke up the Eagles’ party with a win in the fifth heat. Gino Manzares won the next race and Ramirez handed Wells his only defeat of the day to make it three straight Heathens victories and narrowed the gap to four points.

The Eagles struck back with a win by Youth National Champion Brad Pappalardo in the eighth team race, while two straight Aces wins by Buck Blair and Mark Lane, respectively, put Industry Hills in the fight as well.

Consistency proved to be vital to the Eagles’ cause as they finished either first or second in the next five races while the other three teams took turns taking points from each other. The five-race run was powered victories from Wells and Vazzana and second-place finishes from Mike Bloom, Holt, and Ayers.

Blair scored his second straight win in team race 16 to push the Aces into second place ahead of Industry Hills by one point. The next five races again showed the consistency of the Eagles with victories by Bloom, Pappalardo, and Tovatt and second-place finishes from Rick Fehrman and Ayers.

The final team race had no drama involving the team winner, but would settle second and would bring each team’s top rider to the tapes. Wells won handily to put the icing on the cake for the Eagles. Blair fell, but the Aces still ended up second with 29 points, Neil Facchini’s second place gave the Vikings a third-place total of 28 points, and Ramirez finished third to conclude the Heathens’ day with 25 points.

On the individual side of the program, Wells and Blair left the starting line together in the Scratch Main Event, but Wells quickly opened up a comfortable lead and never looked back en route to victory. Blair finished second, Ramirez was third, and Ayers finished fourth.

Mark Lane rode a smooth four laps to earn the victory in the Second Division Main Event. Ryan Tovatt finished second, Rohn Zellner was third, Steve Dziadus finished fourth, and Rick Fehrman was fifth.

Tim McGrath led all four laps to win the Third Division Main Event. Bubba Vazzana was second, Paul Thornton finished third, and Drew Coates was fourth.

Austin Novratil won both heats and ran away with the Youth First Division Main Event. Manzares finished second, Pappalardo was third, and Holt finished fourth.

Rocco Scopellite defeated Major Davis to win the Youth Second Division Main Event.

Nicky Varner was victorious in the Pee Wee Main Event. Emalee Pappalardo finished second, Gino Scopellite was third, Anissa Venegas finished fourth, Kielen Venegas was fifth, and Summer Fehrman finished sixth.

The event brought the curtain down on the 2008 Perris Raceway speedway schedule. The next speedway event at Perris Raceway will be in February of next year. That event, the first speedway event in Southern California in 2009, will be the annual Gumball Rally. Details of that event, and the rest of the 2009 Perris Raceway speedway schedule will be announced soon.
