Harley Night - June 4 - Costa Mesa - Ryan Evans

Former National Champion Charlie “The Edge” Venegas turned in a vintage performance and won the Scratch Main Event in front of a standing room only crowd on Harley Night at the world famous Costa Mesa Speedway.

Former Under 21 National Champion Gino Manzares had first choice of gate position and took gate one. Venegas had second choice and picked gate four. National Champion Aaron Fox selected gate two which left Kurtis Hamill, in his first main event, with gate three.

Manzares was out fast and led in to turn one but Venegas swept around the outside and used the cushion to propel himself into the lead on the back straight. Manzares tried to go inside the leader entering turn three but couldn’t slip by. Manzares didn’t give up, though, and kept the heat on Venegas. The pressure was to no avail, however, as Venegas kept him at bay and led to the checkered flag. Manzares had to settle for second, Fox finished third, and Hamill was fourth.

The Olympique “earned-handicap” format was used for the first time in several years. The first round is traditional scratch racing. In rounds two and three, the racers are handicapped ten yards for each point they earned in the previous round. The top eight competitors earn spots in the semi-finals where the program reverts back to the scratch format.

Manzares opened the evening with a victory over Samuel Ramirez. Fox beat Hamill in the second heat. Venegas defeated Max Ruml in event three. Austin Novratil beat Dillon Ruml to end round one.

Round two began with a oddly enough with a track staff member inexplicably on the track in turn one which forced Shawn McConnell to lay his bike down but it went undetected by the referee. The race concluded with Tyson Talkington crossing the line first and McConnell pleading his case. It was determined that the race would be rerun at the end of the round.

Gage Geist started in the front of event 10 and led all the way with Dillon Ruml finishing second. Max Ruml went through traffic to win event 11. Kurtis Hamill won event 12 with Novratil getting second. McConnell was victorious ahead of Manzares in the restaged event nine.

Venegas led the first race of the final round of heats before Manzares went by on the third lap for the lead and the victory. Fox was an easy winner in event 15 with Hamill finishing second. “Flyin” Mike Faria won the next heat ahead of Max Ruml. Talkington beat Novratil to win the final heat.

In a sign of things to come Venegas used the outside in the first bend to take the lead and the win in semi one with Fox earning second to join in him in the main event. Manzares won the second semi with Hamill finishing second to complete the main event field.

The Support Main Event ended abruptly in turn two when contact put Rick Valdez on the ground and Robert Curry and Eloy Medellin in to separate places of the wall in frightening fashion. After several tense minutes Medellin was able to get up but certainly wouldn’t be restarting. Curry wasn’t as fortunate. He had to be transported to a local hospital with several broken bones.

Rudy Laurer was victorious in the restart with Valdez getting second and Mike Bloom finishing third.

Brian Lehman led from start to finish and claimed his first victory in the Support B Main Event. Steve Brown was second, Pam Bennett finished third, and Jonni Jade was fourth.
National Champions Joe Jones and Tom Summers won both of their heats and completed their perfect evening by winning the Sidecar Main Event. James Kinne and Dana Catone were second and Stuart Glass and Jack Straw finished in third.
