2018 California State Championship - Industry Racing, CA, USA - August 25, 2018

There’s an old adage stating that you want to save the best for last and that’s exactly what a stunned crowd saw on the very last lap of Industry Racing’s 2018 season. The track’s Season Points Champion, Dillon Ruml, used a spectacular pass on the final lap to snatch the California State Championship.

Five-times and defending State Champion Billy “The Kid” Janniro was undefeated entering the Final and earned the right to pick his starting position first. His choice was gate one. Aaron Fox had second choice and decided on gate four. Dillon Ruml picked gate two, leaving his brother, Max, with gate three.

Janniro made the best start and for nearly two laps it looked like he would match the legendary Mike and Steve Bast with six championships each. However, Dillon Ruml was closing in on the leader and was within striking distance. Dillon Ruml went to the outside and as they approached the white flag Janniro drifted up toward the fence to block the attack. Dillon Ruml deftly switched back to the inside and dived underneath Janniro entering turn one. The move surprised Janniro so much that he briefly straightened up and lost all momentum. This gave the new leader a comfortable lead on the final lap. Dillon Ruml was first to the checkered flag, Janniro had to settle for second, Max Ruml was third, and Fox finished fourth. The crowd gave the 19 year old a load ovation and Dillon’s brother was as excited as he was.

The heats commenced with Fox beating Blake Borello in event one. Dillon Ruml defeated two-time State Champion Bobby “Boogaloo” Schwartz in event two. Janniro scored his first win ahead of Russell Green. Austin Novratil defeated Max Ruml after a side-by-side battle to end round one, but mechanical issues would rule him out for the rest of the night.

Round two began with Janniro using the outside to pass and defeat Tim Gomez. 16 year old Colton Hicks beat Green in the next event. Fox defeated Tommy Hedden for his second straight win. Max Ruml passed Dillon Ruml around the outside to finish the second round with a victory.

The third round started with Max Ruml beating Jimmy “Little Animal” Fishback. Jason Ramirez used the cushion to pass Schwartz for the lead and the win in event 13. Janniro made it three straight victories by holding off the persistent Dillon Ruml. Green went to the outside to pass Gomez and ended round three with a win.

Round four began with a three-wide battle featuring Borello, Colton Hicks, and Bob Hicks. The two teenagers, Borello and Colton Hicks made it a two-racer fight before Borello surged ahead with a very impressive victory. Dillon Ruml beat Gomez for his second win. Fox scored his third win of the evening by beating Max Ruml. Janniro finished the fourth round with a win over Fishback.

Dillon Ruml opened the final round of heats with a defeat of Green for his third victory. Janniro completed the heats unblemished after beating Max Ruml. Fox scored his fourth victory ahead of Gomez in the penultimate heat. Schwartz showed why he is a legend by winning the final heat to get himself into the semis.

Janniro romped to victory in the first semi with Max Ruml getting second to join him the Final. Fox made gate four work and led Dillon Ruml into the Final by winning the second semi.

Landon Norton won his heat, his semi, and completed his perfect night by winning the Junior 250 Main Event. Jake Isaac finished second, Sebastian Palmese was third, and Cameron Krezman finished fourth.

Owen Williams led all four laps en route to victory in the Mini 150 Main Event. Justin Almon finished second, Nick Hohlbein was third, Colton Nelson finished fourth, and Levi Leutz was fifth.

The State Championship concluded the 2018 season at Industry Racing. The facility has hosted the event every year since 2006.
