At long last racing action finally got underway at Auburn's Fast Friday's Motorcycle Speedway.

There is an old saying that states if you are given lemons make lemonade. That is exactly what the Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway did Friday night in Auburn Ca. to open their delayed-postponed 2020 season. Unable to have traditional speedway racing at the Gold Country Fairgrounds because of the Covid 19 pandemic Fast Fridays owner David Joiner dovetailed the first racing event of the season with a three night extravaganza of social distancing entertainment at the fairgrounds. The racing in the arena was without fans and then live streamed up to the parking lot filled with fans watching the event safely on large screens socially distancing in or around their cars.

Outside of fact that the stands were empty except for announcer Mike Rooney and film crew members the racing was great. Highlighted by the big guns, ten time national champion Billy Janniro and back from racing in Europe Luke Becker, up from So. Cal Aaron Fox and up and comer young guns Kyle Cunningham, Dylan Wagner, Anthony and Timmy Dion and the rest of the great division one racers it was a fantastic show. Sidecars, division two, division three, youth divisions and of course the pee-wees rounded out a full night of racing.

Billy Janniro racing in his first race of the year blew off some of the dust winning the Scratch main event. Again, he owns the event and he was undefeated in the scratch program. In the main against Luke Becker, local legend Bart Bast and Russell Green, Bast rolled into the tapes at the start and was excluded. Green and Becker both challenged Janniro but could not take him. Green was second, and Becker was third. It was a little eerie as Janniro did his signature victory wheelie with no crowd on their feet cheering in the arena, but enjoyed by fans in their cars.

Having a great night young Kyle Cunningham 17, has really come on strong over the off season and rode to a first place finish in the handicap main event undefeated in the handicap program. Riding off the zero line this young man will surely see some deeper yardage sooner than later. Tyler Warren was second, Blake Borello was third.

Cunningham was also victorious in Division II riding off the 50 yard line. Cunningham held off Landon Norton who was second and Derik Denzin who finished third. Cunningham should find himself riding in Division I soon. Cunningham had a busy night throwing a leg over the Team SOS sidecar with pilot Lawrence McNutt also. Division III was won by Fast Friday’s newcomer Jasper Holmes off the zero line. Holmes won his heat to transfer to the main. Greg Moore was second and Tim Dion was third. Alex Martin won the Youth 250 division and Nick Hohlbein won the Youth 150 division.

Seven sidecars journeyed to Fast Fridays putting on a great show. National champions Joe Jones and Josh Flammia won the main event and each of their heats. The team of Robert and Laurie Curry challenged but could not get over on the champs finishing second. The team of Smylie Kinne and David Bernardo finished third.

It was a great experiment getting around safely the constrains that Covid-19 has placed on all of us, but speedway promoters will keep trying to finds safe ways to bring racing to their dedicated fans. Keep tuned to fastfridays.com for upcoming events.
