Just four days after his runner-up finish at the California State Championship, Aaron Fox moved to the top of the podium by winning the Scratch Main Event at Industry Hills Speedway.
Lined up across the tapes from inside to outside for the Scratch Main were former Under 21 National Champion Gino Manzares, Shawn “Mad Dog” McConnelll, twice former World Pairs Champion Bobby “Boogaloo” Schwartz, and Fox was next to the wall. Fox was off the starting line first and led by a small margin entering the first corner. Manzares took control as they started on the back straight but Fox charged underneath the leader and was in front as they completed the first lap. Manzares sought a way to back into the lead but Fox was not feeling generous. Fox steadily increased his lead and was first to the finish line. Manzares finished second, McConnell was third, and Schwartz finished fourth.
Notably absent from the main event was AMA Speedway National Champion “Mad” Max Ruml who had won all five main events at Industry Hills Speedway this season. His bid for six ended when he suffered an engine failure while leading his semifinal.
Ruml, fresh from winning his California State Championship at Industry just four days before, begin the evening with a victory over “Fast” Eddie Castro. Manzares was victorious over Tim Gomez in the second heat. McConnell and Fox battled side-by-side for a lap before Fox secured the lead and the win to finish the first round.
Schwartz, who will celebrate his 66th birthday on August 11, excited the crowd and the pits with a solid win ahead of Gomez to begin the second round. Ruml defeated Fox for his second straight win. McConnell and Manzares had an awesome inside-outside four-lap battle with McConnell just edging ahead to end round two with the victory.
Round three started with Manzares making the start ahead of Ruml. Ruml wasn’t settling for second and went to the outside to chase down the leader. Joey Donaldson went down in turn three behind them but struggled to get himself and his machine in a safe spot. Manzares cleared prone rider but Ruml had to lay his machine down to avoid catastrophe. The race was declared over and Manzares was awarded with his second victory. Gomez led the next heat for two laps but Under 21 National Champion Slater Lightcap used the ample outside dirt to power around him and race away with the win. Fox ended the heats by beating Castro for his second win.
A crash in the first attempt required a restart to the first semi. Ruml launched into the lead with McConnell behind him but Lightcap was having bike problems and pulled to the infield. Ruml seemingly had his fourth victory of the night and his ticket to the main punched when he went well off line entering turn three the third time and then coasted to a stop near the pit gate. That left just McConnell and Schwartz on the track and the pair of sexagenarians cruised into the main event. Fox led the first lap of the second semi before Manzares slipped by the inside entering turn three the second time to take the lead and the win. Fox’s second-place finish transferred him the main as well.
With Ruml and Lightcap on the sidelines the Scratch Consolation became a match race between Gomez and Castro. After a brief battle Gomez pulled away for the win.
Mark Fillebrown leapt into the lead from gate three and took the initial lead in the Second Division Main Event. David Newsham emerged from the second bend as the closest threat to the leader. It was to no avail as Fillebrown stretched his lead with each lap and won for the third time. Newsham held on for second, Harold Hartke was third, and Eloy Medellin, who was celebrating a birthday, finished fourth.
Jim Sanders led the Third Division Main Event through the first bend on the back straight. Isaiah Canales, bidding for his second consecutive victory, stormed up the inside exiting turn four. His hopes for victory ended with Jordan Vanderham took the lead entering turn one. Vanderham left little doubt about the outcome as he raced away with his second main event victory of the season. Canales finished second, Sanders was third, Steve “Beach Ball” Brown finished fourth, and Greg Willis was credited with fifth.
“Speedway” Charlie Trana won both heats and topped his perfect evening by winning the Junior 250 Main Event. Levi “Cowboy” Leutz finished second and Nick Dunn was third.
Three racers lined up at the tapes for the Mini 150 Main Event with Ryder Schultz starting at the end of the back straight. Morgan Myers got a great start and led her competitors into turn one. Meanwhile Schultz made the long march from the back. Morgan Myers steadily increased her lead in hopes of putting enough distance between herself and the fast-charging Schultz who picked off Maddux Myers and then Kayd Fiore. He found himself in second but Morgan Myers had little more than one lap to go. Schultz gave it everything he had but Morgan Myers scored the victory. Schultz settled for second and, in a great show of sportsmanship, was clapping for the winner on the cool-down lap. Maddux Myers came home third and Kayd Fiore was fourth.
Hudson Jones spotted his three competitors a half-lap at the start of the Pee Wee Main Event. Jett Ferre led for the first lap before Jenson Horn took control. Jones kept the throttle on and made up a lot of ground the first three laps. Horn led as they took the white flag but Jones had the leader in his sights. Jones assumed the lead coming out of turn two. He was flawless through the final corner and was first to the checkered flag. Horn was second, Mark Maldonado finished third, and Ferre was fourth.
The next event at Industry Hills Speedway was supposed to be Wednesday, August 3. However, an event scheduled for Saturday, August 6 at The Grand Arena was canceled and, seeing the large crowd last Saturday, Race Director Kelly Inman jumped at the chance to move to the weekend date.
That event will be Bruce Flanders Ugly Hawaiian Shirt Night. The event will honor the legendary motor sports announcer who announced speedway races for 50 years and was the official voice of Industry Racing from its inception in 2004 through 2018. The evening will have all divisions, sidecars, and the popular Ugly Hawaiian Shirt Contest.
