2017 California State Championship - Industry Racing, CA, USA - August 26, 2017

Billy “The Kid” Janniro turned in a flawless performance and captured his fifth California State Championship at Industry Racing.

Janniro’s unblemished performance throughout the evening earned him the right to pick his starting position first for the Final. He picked gate four. This wouldn’t typically happen but Janniro won two heats and his semi-final from that gate. However, he would be putting four fast-starting competitors inside of him. Broc Nicol, whose only defeat of the evening was to Janniro and won his semi from gate four, really raised eyebrows by picking gate three. Aaron Fox selected gate one and that meant that defending State Champion “Mad” Max Ruml would attempt to retain his title from gate two.

Janniro proved that his decision was correct by launching into the lead right from the start. Nicol made gate three work well enough to follow Janniro into turn one. Janniro led through lap one while Nicol, Max Ruml, and Fox gave chase. The trio tried valiantly to gain ground on the leader, but the National Champion wasn’t about to have his perfect night spoiled. Janniro wheelied across the finish line with State Title number five, Nicol was second, Max Ruml finished third, and Fox was fourth.

Former Under 21 National Champion Gino Manzares kicked off the evening with a victory over Austin “All Throttle” Novratil. Fox defeated Tyson Burmeister in event two. Max Ruml began his title defense by beating four-time State Champion Charlie “The Edge” Venegas. Janniro used a shrewd lap-two cutback move on Nicol to end the first round with a victory.

Novratil beat Burmeister to start the second round. Nicol defeated Venegas for his first victory. Fox won his second straight race by beating Manzares. Janniro finished the second round by using the outside to pass and defeat Shawn “Mad Dog” McConnell.

The third round started with Janniro winning his third consecutive race, this time at the expense of Novratil. Burmeister swept around the outside of Dillon Ruml for the win in event 13. Nicol used the cushion to pass Max Ruml as they ended lap three and went on to his second straight victory. Fox made it three for three to end round three by beating two-time State Champion Bobby “Boogaloo” Schwartz.

Round four began with Nicol beating Dillon Ruml for his third consecutive win and also stopping Fox’s perfect run. Tyson Talkington beat Samuel Ramirez in the next event. Janniro beat Manzares to remain the only undefeated racer. Max Ruml beat Shaun Harmatiuk to end the fourth round.

Entering the final round Janniro sat atop the standings with 12 points; Nicol was next with 11 points; Fox was right behind with 10; Max Ruml checked in with nine; Manzares had eight points; Novratil and Burmeister were tied with seven points; and Dillon Ruml had six.

Venegas started the final round with a key victory to get himself enough points to get into the semis and Novratil’s second also placed him into the semis. Janniro remained perfect with a big victory from gate four over Max Ruml and Fox. Manzares won the penultimate race while Dillon Ruml’s second did not garner him enough points to make the semis. Nicol beat Burmeister in the last heat with both moving on to the semis.

Janniro, starting in gate four, romped to his sixth victory in the first semi and Max Ruml’s second meant he would join him in the Final. Nicol won the second semi with Fox also transferring to the Final with his second place.

Janniro’s victory places him just one behind the legendary Mike and Steve Bast who each won six State titles, the last of which being Mike’s perfect victory in 1983 at Inland Motorcycle Speedway in San Bernardino.

“Gentleman” Jake Isaac led all four laps en route to victory in the Junior 250 Main Event. Cameron Krezman finished second, Sterling Martin was third, and Alex Martin finished fourth.

Slater Lightcap followed up his perfect performance at the AMA/FIM Youth Silver Cup Championship by winning all of his races, including the Mini 150 Main Event. “Lightning” Luke Whitcomb was second, Travis Horn finished third, and Owen Williams was fourth.

The State Championship brought Industry Racing’s 2017 to a close. This was the fourteenth season at the venue and the sixth under the current and most successful promotion. The season was the first since the tragic loss of Carol Perez last fall. Perez was a pivotal part of the success of the current promotion and her legacy will live on for many years to come. The first event of 2018 is tentatively slated to start with the Gumball Rally Weekend in February, most likely on President’s Day Weekend. The regular season will begin in May with the Conner Penhall Memorial Cup.
