North American Speedway Final
December’s a busy month. My birthday, the holidays, New Years and the Rose Parade. Yes sirree Bob it’s a full schedule for an old man like me.
Of course it’s also when Steve Evans promotes his North American Final at Perris. Now I’m not complaining cause it a great race. Kind of like an early Christmas present it’s a chance to mingle with friends and see some absolutely incredible racing.
I get that Evans gets the credit here because he’s been working this annual event for years. Each time it gets better as lessons learned improve the product. Yes indeed, his team has this gig down.
He did however get a little help as the rider lineup was absolutely stellar. Riders we have not seen most or all of the season were here from England and Europe. They, like our California and New York competitor’s want, this title and will battle hard to get it.
Well of course they will. The North American Final has history. First run in 1976 it’s tile holders include Autrey, Bast, Schwartz, Penhall, Sigalos, Cook, Moran, Ermolenko, Hancock, Manchester, Faria, Larsen, Becker, Janniro and Ruml. Needless to say it’s a very prestigious title any racer would gladly carry on their resume.
Theirs an added factor. They like this Perris track. It’s big, fast and well prepared most of the time. And if your ready for this they like the promoter. Who knew, it’s a world gone mad.
There was some bad. Rain had plagued the track on previous days and was forecast for race day. Fortunately we lucked out rain wise but it was cold. I’m not talking get out of you shorts and wear long pants and shirts with sleeves. I’m talking way more than us Southern Californian are used to. Yes it effected attendance but it was still a good crowd considering the circumstances.
Those who stayed home were the loser cause they missed some really excellent racing. Exciting with a lot of upsets rider domination was hard as some of our best racers had mechanical, mental, crash and tape breaking issues. With a field this good it’s hard for a rider to come back once’s he’s dropped a bunch of points.
Want to see video of the races for yourself well no problem. Watch all 20 heats plus the restarts on Facebook.
See pictures on Facebook.
Need to acknowledge the Juniors. Racing the Youth Long Track Nationals they handled themselves well. Fact is it we have some good upcoming talent coming through the ranks. Also have to give a shout-out to those Division 2 and 3 racers who rode once the evenings program concluded.
Always enjoy their company so mentioning my favorite BUD, Billy Gray and Ernie Aragon who accompanied me to the races is a must. Each with stories of yesteryear our road trips are always an adventure. Maybe some day I’ll put them to paper but time hardly allows for the present never mind the past.
And thanks Steve Evans. Your promotions only get better and Speedway is better off because of it. If I may speak for the race community we thank you for your continued effort in showing the world what talented riders race here in America.
Last but not least here’s a shameless plug for the upcoming Team USA vs The World on February 4th at Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield. Not run in the United States for 34 years it will be a slug fest of us against them. Hope you all attend.
OK, that’s enough of my rambling. Scoring of all the races is posted below.
Thanks for listening. See you where the wheels go round. Howie Zechner
