2018 FIM Youth Silver Cup - Industry Racing, CA, USA - August 12

Sebastian “Big Daddy” Palmese and Colton Nelson both went home with top honors from the 6th annual FIM Youth Silver Cup Championship at Industry Racing.

Palmese entered the Junior 250 Final unbeaten and had first choice of starting position. The three-time Junior 250 National Champion chose gate one. Landon Norton picked gate two, “Gentleman” Jake Isaac selected gate three, which left Anthony Dion with gate four.

The first attempt ended in a heap in turn four with Anthony Dion on the ground. The red flag came out and Anthony Dion was excluded from the restart. The second time the tapes went up Palmese exploded from the starting line and into the lead. Norton and Isaac chased after the leader but it was to no avail. Palmese cruised to the checkered flag and won his third consecutive Silver Cup championship. Norton finished second and Isaac was third.

Nelson entered the Mini 150 Final as the top scorer and decided to start from gate one. Levi Leutz selected gate three, Owen Williams picked gate four, and Jose “Nitro” Navarrete would start from gate three.

Nelson left the starting line first and the field into turn one. Nelson opened up a comfortable lead while the battle behind him was fierce. Navarrete and Leutz raced side-by-side for second before Navarrete secured the spot. Leutz stayed wide and then had to contend with Williams to hold on to third. Williams was able to slip past Leutz as well. Nelson, free and clear of the action behind him, put together four smooth laps and claimed the Mini 150 Championship. Navarrete finished second, Williams was third, and Leutz finished fourth.

The FIM Youth Silver Cup is the second of two standalone youth events promoted by Industry Racing. In its six years it has become a big event not only on the youth calendar but to American speedway fans in general. It is traditionally held the day after Industry Racing hosts its round of the AMA Speedway National Championship Series. This often means that many of the top American speedway racers will be in attendance and are there to support the stars of the future. This year’s event had 13 Junior 250 competitors and nine racers in the Mini 150 division.

The Junior 250 heats began with a battle between Greg Moore and Landon Collins before Moore took control. Norton slipped past Moore at the end of lap two and went on to his first victory of the day. Kyle Cunningham beat Anthony Dion in the second heat. Palmese got his day off to a good start by beating Dylan Wagner to end round one.

Round two opened with Anthony Dion defeating Wagner. Timmy Dion kept Norton at bay to match his brother’s victory in the previous heat. Palmese beat Slater Lightcap to close the second round as the only undefeated racer.

Cunningham started the third round with a win over Norton for his second win of the day. Anthony Dion made it two straight wins by holding off his brother Timmy. Palmese remained undefeated with a win ahead of Isaac.

Round four commenced with Isaac beating Cameron Krezman for his first win of the day. Palmese made it four wins on the trot with a win over Cunningham. Anthony Dion led event 18 but Norton was pressuring him through lap one. The tight battle continued through lap two when the two came together in turn four. Norton pushed through on the inside but Anthony Dion ended up on the ground. The race was allowed to continue and Norton earned his second win.
The odd number of races meant that there was an extra heat. Isaac won his second straight race with Timmy Dion getting second.

Palmese’s dominant day continued with a win in the first semi. Isaac finished second to also transfer to the Final. Timmy Dion was third and Wagner finished fourth.

A big crash ended the second semi in turn one. A full restart was ordered and when the tapes went up again it was Norton who emerged the victor. Anthony Dion was second and moved on to the Final. Lightcap was credited with third and Cunningham with fourth.

Nelson opened the Mini 150 heats with a win over Navarrete. Williams led the next heat before Leutz blasted by him for the lead and the win.

Justin Almon scored an impressive win over Leutz to start the next round. Charlie Trana handed Nelson is only defeat in round two’s other heat.

Leutz defeated Trana to start round three. Navarrete led the next heat for two laps but Williams slipped past him for the lead and went on to victory.

Navarrete started the fourth round by paying Williams back with a win of his own. Nelson’s winning streak continued with a victory over Leutz.

Nelson scored his third win in the final heat with Williams earning second.
